A further deterioration of the Brazilian fiscal reaction in view of Covid-19
The fiscal reaction function measures how the government's primary surplus reacts to the evolution of public debt. Campos and Cysne (2019b) observed that the reaction function has been almost steadily decreasing since 2012 and it has turned from positive to negative values in 2017 and 2018. In the subsequent period, the improvement of some economic indicators led the fiscal reaction to a recovery. Nevertheless, in 2020, with the advent of COVID-1…
An alert on the recent fall of the fiscal reaction in Brazil
Recent evaluations of how the Brazilian government's primary surplus reacts to the evolution of the debt to GDP ratio convey two important (and worrisome) messages: first, the reaction function has been almost steadily decreasing since 2012. Second, it has turned from positive to negative figures as of October 2017. With effective real interest rates (over the net government debt) higher than prospects of GDP growth, negative figures for the fisc…
Brasil
On the Positive Correlation between Income Inequality and Unemployment
Two papers published in this journal (Jantti, 1994, and Mocan, 1999), among others, find empirical evidence that “increases in structural unemployment have a substantial aggravating impact on income inequality.” The main point of this work is to show that standard job-search models can help us understand this empirical regularity. As a byproduct of the analysis, the paper also provides a closed-form general expression that enables direct calculat…

Mario Henrique Simonsen

The Stock Exchanges
The stock exchanges in Brazil date back approximately a hundred years. For example, the Rio and São Paulo Stock Exchanges were organised in 1845 and 1890, respectively. In total, Brazil has nine stock exchanges which operate as non-profit associations. Close to 95 per cent of trading takes place on the two largest exchanges in Rio and São Paulo. For that reason the focus of this chapter is on these two dominant market places
