Halieutica. Pierwszy fragment to poetycka inwokacja i dedykacja dla rzymskiego cesarza Marka Aureliusza (H. I 1–9). Drugi fragment opisuje największe potwory Morza Śródziemnego i Oceanu Atlantyckiego, w tym walenie, rekiny, delfiny, morsy i foki (H. I 360–408). Przekładowi towarzyszy krótki komentarz i zwięzłe objaśnienia. W ce…
Problem periodyzacji literatury łacińskiej doby cesarstwa rzymskiego (I–II wiek n.e.)
Artykuł podejmuje problem periodyzacji literatury rzymskiej doby cesarstwa rzymskiego, skupiając się na dwóch pierwszych wiekach n.e. Autor, zakładając cykliczność zjawisk w dziedzinie kultury i literatury, proponuje wydzielenie trzech faz historycznoliterackich: [a] okres wczesnoimperialny (14–68 n.e.); [b] okres flawiański lub liberalny (69–117 n.e.); [c] okres archaizujący lub frontoniański (117–192 n.e.). Skrupulatna analiza dzieł epickich, l…
Przekaz Al-Dżahiza o wierzeniach Słowian. Folklorystyka w badaniach nad prasłowiańską mitologią
The paper concentrates on the Slavic snake myth; it includes creatures believed to suckle milk from cattle udders. We argue that this myth (so far mainly associated with folklore) reflects very ancient beliefs held by our ancestors and can be independently confirmed in several sources. Most noteworthy among them is a ninth century note included by al-Jāḥiẓ in his Kitāb al-ḥayawān (Book of Animals) which we quote in the paper. The Arab writer repo…
Old Latin bouerum and Iouerum from a Diachronic Point of View
The aim of this article is to discuss two Old Latin aberrant genitive plural forms in -erum, namely bouerum «bouum» (Cato, Agr. 62) or Iouerum «Iouum» (Varro, Ling. VIII 74), on the basis of the morphological and semantic considerations. It is hard to imagine how the regular third declension forms bouum and Iouum could be changed into bouerum and Iouerum. In his commented edition of Varro’s De lingua Latina (2019) Wolfgang de Melo, following Rola…

Ugrofinizmy w języku staropruskim

The following words are verified as Finno-Ugricisms: OPrus. jūrī ‘sea’ (← FV. *järwä ‘lake, sea’); OPrus. kadegis ‘juniper’ (← BF. *kataŋa ‘id.’ ← Ur. *kača ‘resin’); OPrus. kaywe ‘mare’ (← BF. *keewe ‘female horse or reindeer’
The Mediterranean Spearfish in Ancient Greek and Latin
The article discusses the problem of identifying a Mediterranean fish called γλαῦκος in Ancient Greek and glaucus in Latin. It was a big and well-known fish living in the Mediterranean Sea. It appears in numerous literary sources of the classical (Greek and Roman) world. After analyzing all preserved attestations of the Greco-Latin ichthyonym, the authors of the present article suggest that this fish should be identified with the Mediterranean sp…
Zagadnienie periodyzacji literatury łacińskiej doby republiki rzymskiej
Artykuł podejmuje problem periodyzacji literatury rzymskiej doby republiki.
Baba, Żaba I Krowa, Czyli Rozważania O Tym, Jak Dawne Są Ludowe Wierzenia O Żabie Wysysającej Mleko Krowie
The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the archaic status of the Polish folk beliefs about certain amphibians (frogs, toads) and reptiles (snakes, lizards, salamanders) believed to have sucked milk from cows. Some Polish peasants were even convinced that milk cows loved suckers (esp. snakes, frogs) more than their calves. There are many folk tales where a witch or a mythical creature assumes the form of a armful animal to suck cow’s milk. The au…
The Undying Controversy of the Presence of Slavs on the Island of Crete. Remarks on a New Book by Pantelis Haralampakis
The paper demonstrates the current state of research on the presence of Slavs on the island of Crete in the Middle Ages, as well as in the modern times. The basis for the discussion is a new book of Pantelis Haralampakis, published in 2016. There are numerous controversies surrounding the issues of the exact chronology of Slavic presence on the island, the lexical influence of South Slavic languages on the Cretan dialect of Modern Greek, as well …
Further Turkish Loanwords in the Cretan Dialect of Modern Greek
Five years ago Vasilis Orfanos published an excellent monograph on the Turkish lexical borrowings attested in the Cretan dialect of Modern Greek (Orfanos 2014). In this paper the present authors increase the number of the possible Cretan Turkisms, providing and explaining additional items not listed in Orfanos’s book

Gaulish Suiorebe ‘with two sisters’
Krzysztof Tomasz Witczak. Gaulish SUIOREBE ‘with two sisters’. The Poznań Society for the Advancement of the Arts and Sciences. PL ISSN 0079-4740, pp. 59-62 Traces of the dual number may be identified in the Gaulish language on the basis of the historical-comparative method. It is suggested that the Gaulish form SUIOREBE represents an instrumental dual with the sociative meaning ‘with two sisters’. The conclusion is that the Gaulish SUIOREBE cont…
Hystrix in Greek
Dictionaries of the Ancient Greek language distinguish only two or three different meanings of the Greek word ὕστριξ. The present author analyses all the contexts and glosses where the word in question appears. On the basis of his own analysis he assumes that dictionaries of Ancient Greek should contain as many as seven different semantems: I. ‘swine bristle’, II. ‘swine leather whip, the cat, used as an instrument of punishment’, III. ‘porcupine…
