  • Another Look at the Word-Final Syllable in Old Persian

    Luka Repanšek•ARTICLE•Indo-Iranian Journal•2026

The article offers a long-overdue reconciliatory reassessment of the much-discussed Old Persian cuneiform sequences ⟨‐Ca-a⟩, ⟨‐Ca/i-i-ya⟩, and ⟨‐Ca/u-u-va⟩ in word-final position, and of their phonetic and phonographic interpretation. It argues that the view according to which ⟨‐Ca-a⟩ cannot represent final vowel lengthening rests on assumptions that cannot be independently substantiated from the orthographic evidence. Accordingly, ⟨‐Ca-a⟩ is bes…

  • Reconsidering the problem of Vedic ūrdhváand Avestan ərəδβa-, arəduuī

    Luka Repanšek•ARTICLE•Indogermanische Forschungen•2026

The article proposes a straightforward solution to the long-standing problem of the reflexes of the Proto-Indo-European adjective *H3érH2dhu-/*H3r̥H2dhéu̯- ‘upright’ (thematized early on to *H3r̥(H2)dh-(e)u̯-ó-) and its originally athematic feminative *H3r̥H2dh-éu̯-iH2-/*H3r̥H2dh-u-i̯éH2- in Vedic and Avestan. It is proposed that the non-feminine stem of the adjective, reconstructable for Proto-Indo-Iranian as *Hr̥Hdhu̯ó-, has secondarily introdu…

  • The Venetic inscriptions from Idrija pri Bači revisited

    Open Access•Luka Repanšek•ARTICLE•Arheološki vestnik•2025

The article offers a thorough palaeographical analysis of the three Venetic inscriptions from Idrija pri Bači (Is 1, Is 2, and Is 3), based on the renewed autopsy of the sources in the Prähistorische Abteilung of the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna. Given the significant discrepancies in the existing drawings and transcriptions of the three inscriptions, the gap for a much-needed authoritative reading of Is 1 and Is 2 is now filled, as is the …

  • Venetic inscription on the silo from Štanjel

    Open Access•Manca Vinazza, Luka Repanšek•ARTICLE•Arheološki vestnik•2025

The rib of a silo from Štanjel, which was found in the storage building from the 5th and 4th centuries BC, bears a partially preserved incised inscription. The series of vertical and diagonal marks on the rough surface is non-accidental enough to be recognized as an inscription in the Venetic alphabet (henceforth labeled with the siglum *Ts 4). In a sinistroverse sequence, an interpunctuated and are clearly legible at the very end, enabling a t…

Open Access•Luka Repanšek, Maša Saccara et al.•ARTICLE•Arheološki vestnik•2025

A fragment of a wall of an amphora roughly datable between the end of the 3rd and first half of the 1st century BC discovered at Kaštelir above Korte bears a fragmentary inscription (*Ts 5) in the Venetic alphabet consisting of three letters. The find represents the fourth pre-Roman inscription discovered in the eastern part of Caput Adriae and together with the inscription on the bowl sherd *Ts 3 from the 2nd/1st century BC the second from the s…

  • Ocra — an Etymological Proposal

    Open Access•Luka Repanšek•ARTICLE•Вопросы ономастики•2024

The ancient name of the mountain (pass) that lies at the junction of the Julian and Dinaric Alps (nowadays Mt Nanos and the adjoining Razdrto Pass in southwestern Slovenia) is attested as Ocra in Latin (Pliny) and ̓́Oκρα in Greek sources (Strabo, Ptolemy). The name is surely Italic and is argued to go back to Proto-Indo-European *H2ok̑reH2- (to *H2ek̑ - ‘to be/become/make sharp’). Given that an o-grade root is not expected in a deverbal adjective…

  • The Venetic inscription *Ts 3 from Kaštelir above Korte

    Open Access•Luka Repanšek, Maša Saccara•ARTICLE•Arheološki vestnik•2023

The Venetic inscription from Kaštelir above Korte, bearing the siglum *Ts3, was incised onto a bowl sherd of grey depurated ware. It contains four graphemes in an unfragmented sequence that most likely reads vose, although the paleographic interpretation of the third grapheme remains somewhat problematic. The inscription very likely represents a personal name, probably in an abbreviated form, but one that has no exact match in the available corpu…

  • Loucita

    Open Access•Luka Repanšek•ARTICLE•Вопросы ономастики•2020

The undoubtedly Gaulish personal name Loucita, attested in the Norico-Pannonian onomastic area, is particularly interesting from the point of view of its word formation. Unambiguous parallels for such a derivative are difficult to find in Celtic onomastic material, the only possible but very uncertain candidate being a Goidelic river name Ἀργίτα, recorded by Ptolemy. Outside of Celtic, the name of a Germanic seeress Vel(a)eda, if it goes back to …

Njegova doslej neeksaktno prepoznana funkcija v odnosu do obeh protipolnih demonstrativnih zaimkov za bližnjo in daljno deikso je definirana preko interne rekonstrukcije sinhronega sistema, hkrati z njegovo genezo pa utemeljena in podprta s staroindoiranskim, zlasti v tem pogledu bistv…

  • New Evidence from the Onomastic Tradition of Ig

    Luka Repanšek•ARTICLE•Historical Linguistics•2017

The hapax legomenon QIEMONI found on a recently discovered Roman tombstone from Ig (present-day Slovenia) is analysed from the view-point of epigraphy, onomastics, morpho(phono)logy, and word formation in order to yield or else fail to provide a potentially interesting addition to the PIE lexicon. The sequence is argued to most likely stand for a masculine personal name *Quiemonis, continuing a virtual *kuieH1-mon-(i)o- to PIE *keH1- ‘(have a) re…

  • Towards a clarification of the history of the Slovene river name Soča

    Open Access•Luka Repanšek•ARTICLE•Linguistica•2015

The etymology of the Slovene hydronym Soča (Standard Friulan Lusìnç, Italian Isonzo) was satisfactorily elucidated more than half a century ago. The overall idea that the river name goes back to a derivative of a Proto-Indo-European verbal root *H1eisH2- is undoubtedly correct (the exact meaning of the root in question has, however, not been sufficiently corroborated) but the details remain hopelessly obscure. Given the contemporary reflexes of t…

  • A note on Gaul. duti, Chartres A7, B9

    Luka Repanšek•ARTICLE•Etudes Celtiques•2015

The author tries to account for the morphology and etymology of Gaulish duti (Chartres A7, B9), connecting it to similarly problematic Proto-Slavic *dűma. Judging from its likely syntactic role at the head of two structurally identical Gaulish sentences, duti is argued to represent a feminine action noun in *-ti-. Together with Proto-Slavic *dűma *‘(act of) speaking, thinking’, conceivably an inherited o-grade derivative in *-meH2 to the well-kno…
