  • Across the Copperbelt: Urban & Social Change in Central Africa's Borderland Communities

Miles Larmer, Enid Guene et al.•BOOK•Across the Copperbelt•2021

The Central African Copperbelt, encompassing the mining communities of Katanga (DR Congo) and Zambia, has been central to the study of modernisation and rapid social and political change in urban Africa. This volume expands upon earlier studies of industrial mining, male-dominated formal labour organisation and political change by examining both sides of the border from pre-colonial history to the present and encompassing a wide range of economic…

  • Bodies of Truth: Law, Memory, and Emancipation in Post-Apartheid South Africa

    Rita Kesselring•BOOK•Bodies of Truth•2020

Bodies of Truth offers an intimate account of how apartheid victims deal with the long-term effects of violence, focusing on the intertwined themes of embodiment, injury, victimhood, and memory. In 2002, victims of apartheid-era violence filed suit against multinational corporations, accusing them of aiding and abetting the security forces of the apartheid regime. While the litigation made its way through the U.S. courts, thousands of victims of …

  • Swiss extractivism: Switzerland's role in Zambia's copper sector

    Open Access•Gregor Dobler, Rita Kesselring•ARTICLE•The Journal of Modern African…•2019•Cited by: 6•References: 36

Switzerland is usually not looked upon as a substantial economic actor in Africa. Taking Zambian copper as a case study, we show how important Swiss companies have become in the global commodities trade and the services it depends on. While big Swiss trading firms such as Glencore and Trafigura have generated increasing scholarly and public interest, a multitude of Swiss companies is involved in logistics and transport of Zambian copper.Swiss ext…

  • An Injury to One Is an Injury to All? Class Actions in South African Courts and Their Social Effects on Plaintiffs

    Open Access•Rita Kesselring•ARTICLE•PoLAR Political and Legal…•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 12

This article contributes to one of the key issues in recent scholarship on the relation between law and society: how does engagement with the law trigger shifts in subjectivities? Scholars suggest that as groups and individuals seek recourse to the law, their subjectivities are legalized. They are skeptical of the global increase of social issues being taken to court.I critically review these theories of 'legalization' by empirically tracing the …

  • Case pending: Practices of Inclusion and Exclusion in a Class of Plaintiffs

    Rita Kesselring•ARTICLE•Anthropology Southern Africa•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 11

Apartheid victims have had a difficult standing in South Africa in the years that followed the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). In the government's perspective, the TRC had conclusively dealt with apartheid victimhood. Consequently, when victims turned to US courts in the early 2000s to sue multinational companies for their role in the perpetration of apartheidera crimes, they faced everything from scepticism to hostility. From a differ…
