    This study examines how the career-professional poker player, one type in a deviant occupational group, adapts to outside labeling and stereotyping.     Political alliances formed by marital exchange and the intensity of warfare are examined with data from the New Guinea Highlands. It is found in this study that extravillage alliance bonds are tenuous and impermant because of symbolic, demographic, and political factors which make the defense of intravillage security a more valued alternative.
