Discrimination, sleep, and physical health: Moderation by respiratory sinus arrythmia reactivity
Discrimination (unfair treatment due to group membership) is relatively common among adolescents and has been linked to poor sleep and physical health. Individual differences in physiological functioning may moderate these associations. A sample of 323 youth (48% boys, 52% girls; 58.5% White, 40.9% Black, Mage = 17.38 years, SD = 10.18 months) participated. Adolescents reported on discrimination and health, wore actigraphs to measure sleep, and c…
From Counting Dollars to Counting Sheep: Exploring Simultaneous Change in Economic Well-Being and Sleep among African American Adolescents
In the U.S.A., Black/African American adolescents disproportionately experience short and poor-quality sleep, and there is little understanding of why some experience decrements or improvements in sleep over time. Toward conducting culturally specific research and identifying processes that uniquely explain variability within a racial/ethnic group, we utilized a within-group design to examine socioeconomic status (SES) as a predictor of Black ado…
“But There’s Only So Much You Can Do…” Parent Support-Giving within the Context of Peer Victimization
Little is known regarding the processes that occur when parents support their child who is being victimized by peers. The current study utilized in-depth interviews with 11 fourth- through sixth-grade early adolescents and their mothers as to the processes that occurred when the mothers attempted to help their child cope with peer victimization. Findings indicated a support-giving process that often started after initial disclosure of the victimi…
Longitudinal associations between coping and peer victimization: Moderation by gender and initial peer victimization
Stress coping theories suggest that the effectiveness of coping depends on the level of stress experienced. Existing research shows that efforts to cope with high levels of peer victimization may not prevent subsequent peer victimization. Additionally, associations between coping and peer victimization often differ between boys and girls. The present study included 242 participants (51% girls; 34% Black, 65% White; Mage = 15.75 years). Adolescent…
Does social withdrawal inhibit defending bullied peers and do perceived injunctive norms mitigate those effects
Although a number of social-cognitive and contextual correlates of defending against bullying have been identified, research on the personality traits associated with defending have yielded weak and inconsistent results. The current study provided a novel examination as to whether a tendency toward social withdrawal is associated with less frequent defending and whether perceived injunctive norms for defending and aggression minimize the impact o…
