  • Marine geo-archaeological mapping using Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV). Case study: Ancient semi-submerged settlement of Grotta Naxos, Greece

Open Access•Konstantinos Merkouris, Maria Geraga et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2025

  • Imprints of Holocene aridity variability in the Aegean Sea and interconnections with north-latitude areas

    Open Access•Alexandra Noti, Maria Geraga et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2024•References: 25

The analysis of the ASTC1 sediment core from the south Aegean Sea region offers critical insights into the complex interplay of geological and climatic factors over the Holocene period. The data reveals fluctuating climatic conditions during the last 8.7 ka as seen through the elemental concentrations obtained by XRF core scanning combined with a qualitative mineral analysis within a robust chronological framework. Short-term fluctuations in both…

  • Climate-driven versus anthropogenic induced erosion of the last 3000 years from an ancient lake in the Southern Phokis Plain (Desfina), Greece

    Open Access•G S Polymeris, Maria Geraga et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2024•References: 2

The timing and causes for erosional events at the Kastrouli (Greece) archeological site – a Late Myceneaen with reuse in later periods – are presented. Two borehole sediment cores (max 6 m depth), collected from the footsteps of the settlement hill plain, were studied. Sedimentary analysis and luminescence dating techniques investigate and identify periods of soil aggradation in this record. Moreover, optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) datin…

  • A high-resolution study of planktonic foraminifera during the Holocene at the Tilos-Symi sea basin in the SE Aegean Sea

    Open Access•C Kozanoglou, Maria Triantaphyllou et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 7

High-resolution data for planktonic foraminifera and their groups of ecological interest, including Herbivores and Carnivores, combined with benthic foraminifera and a great variety of biogeochemical indices from the SE Aegean sediment core ST5, contribute to a detailed study concerning major and minor climatic episodes during Holocene. The ST5 sediment record, retrieved from the Tilos-Symi marine basin, evidences the impact of the nearby land, t…

  • Late Pleistocene submarine terraces in the Eastern Mediterranean, central Lebanon, Byblos: Revealing their formation time frame through modeling

  • Atlas of Shipwrecks in Inner Ionian Sea (Greece): A Remote Sensing Approach

Open Access•Maria Geraga, Dimitris Christodoulou et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 11

Underwater cultural heritage (UCH) sites constitute an important part of the overall cultural heritage both nationally and globally as they carry cultural, environmental, scientific, technological, political, economic and social viewpoints. UCH includes not only submerged sites and buildings, but also vessels and aircrafts. The Inner Ionian Sea in Greece is a place rich in a significant number of shipwrecks with a timespan ranging from ancient ti…

  • Assessment of the Eutrophication-Related Environmental Parameters in Two Mediterranean Lakes by Integrating Statistical Techniques and Self-Organizing Maps

Open Access•Ekaterini Hadjisolomou, Konstantinos Stefanidis et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

During the last decades, Mediterranean freshwater ecosystems, especially lakes, have been under severe pressure due to increasing eutrophication and water quality deterioration. In this article, we compared the effectiveness of different data analysis methods by assessing the contribution of environmental parameters to eutrophication processes. For this purpose, principal components analysis (PCA), cluster analysis, and a self-organizing map (SOM…

  • Luminescence geochronology and paleoenvironmental implications of coastal deposits of southeast Cyprus

  • Assessing the Contribution of the Environmental Parameters to Eutrophication with the Use of the “PaD” and “PaD2” Methods in a Hypereutrophic Lake

Open Access•Ekaterini Hadjisolomou, Konstantinos Stefanidis et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016

Lake Pamvotis (Greece) is a shallow hypereutrophic lake with a natural tendency to eutrophication. Several restoration measures were applied, but with no long-term success. To examine the causes for this an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was created in order to simulate the chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) levels and to investigate the role of the associated environmental parameters. The ANN managed to simulate with good correlation the simulated Chl-a and…

  • Palaeoenvironmental implications of a marine geoarchaeological survey conducted in the SW Argosaronic gulf, Greece

Open Access•Maria Geraga, George Papatheodorou et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 17

A marine geoarcheological survey was conducted at the southwestern end of the Argosaronic gulf in Greece, an area of archaeological importance. The survey was initiated by the discovery of a Late Bronze Age (LBA) shipwreck off Modi Islet. The survey which employed echo-sounding, sub-bottom profiling, side scan sonar systems and sediment coring extended to the area between Poros Island, Modi Islet and Argolid peninsula, aiming to evaluate the chan…

  • The Navarino Naval Battle Site, Greece-an Integrated Remote-Sensing Survey and a Rational Management Approach

Open Access•George Papatheodorou, Maria Geraga et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2005•Cited by: 8•References: 2

An integrated remote-sensing survey was carried out in Navarino Bay, where in 1827 a battle was fought between the allied British, French and Russian navies and the Turkish-Egyptian fleet. Integration and interpretation of the remote-sensing data has shown the presence of shipwreck remains on the sea-floor and possible shipwrecks buried under the sea-bed. It has also shown that the historical remains are under threat from the heavy anchors of tan…
