Eckhart research is on a new, hitherto unknown path. It is undergoing editorial upheaval, especially because the German works are no longer being continued as an edition of the DFG. There are 79 unedited sermon texts which may be attributed to Meister Eckhart. A new digital edition could also reopen the debate on the attribution to Meister Eckhart. The three books discussed here pursue very different interests in terms of knowledge. The book »Mei…
Blasphemies, Heresy and Inquisition in Paris 1306–1314
This article will discuss the political and religious use of trials against heresy as they were established in Western-European Christian countries in the thirteenth century. I use the case of two trials happening in Paris at the same time. One trial was against the Knights Templar. The charge was mainly blasphemy. In 1310, after some retractions, 54 Knights Templar were burned outside the East Gate of Paris. A little later, the Beguine Marguerit…
Marguerite Porete as a Theologian of Love – in Conversation with Meister Eckhart
In this essay, I will examine the theological prerequisites of statements found in Marguerite Porete’s Cistercian-influenced theology of love, as well as the similarities between the mystical ‘vivre sans pourquoi’ of Marguerite and the ‘without a why’ in the Homilies of Meister Eckhart. Over and beyond, I will analyse the parallels in the theological and spiritual approach of both authors who were born about 1260 or even before, and who both had …
Afterword
The contributions to this section present manifold and diverse examples indicative of a form of religion which we may characterise by its inextricable connection between selfhood and transcendence. However, religion is not necessarily dependent upon establishing a relationship between religious agents and transcendence, whether in scripture or praxis, nor does it inevitably imply that these agents need to be qualified as selves in a distinct mann…
Self-transcendence in Meister Eckhart
1 Meister Eckhart's vernacular project in the service of religious self-awareness The importance Meister Eckhart the Lehrmeister and Lebemeister, thus the Parisian magister and vernacular preacher, ascribes to 'equality' is striking. He means both human and religious equality. (cf. Sermon 65, MW) Eckhart addresses all individuals -without distinction of sex -on the basis of equal possibilities. In scholastic philosophy as for Eckhart, of course, …
3 Wozu…
The Cambridge Handbook of Human Dignity
This introduction to human dignity explores the history of the notion from antiquity to the nineteenth century, and the way in which dignity is conceptualised in non-Western contexts. Building on this, it addresses a range of systematic conceptualisations, considers the theoretical and legal conditions for human dignity as a useful notion and analyses a number of philosophical and conceptual approaches to dignity. Finally, the book introduces cur…
Sport and Christianity
