Open Access•Napoleon Wolanski, Armando Rojas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•2010

The problem whether the pubertal spurt is a single developmental effort or series of changes with dominance of intensified increments was considered. The examinations took place in the tropical climate of Yucatan and included 49 boys and 47 girls aged 11-13 years and being of the Maya, Mestizo and Creole origin. The youths were attending two schools located in rather poor districts of Merida city (Yucatan, Mexico). The measurements started in Feb…

  • Ethnic Differences in Body Proportions. Genes or Environment

Open Access•A Siniarska, Napoleon Wolanski•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•2002•Cited by: 1

In various ethnic groups adult subjects have contrasting body proportions. Are there effects of differences in genes and/or in living conditions? The problem was examined in 1208 subjects, aged 2-70 years from Merida and Progreso in Yucatan, Mexico. Results were compared with published own data for Polish populations. Because body segments are in some proportion to body size, to investigate this problem, the percentile indices were calculated. Fo…

The development of subcutaneous fat tissue in the US was found to follow the following stages: preschool loss, prepubertal gain, adolescent loss, stabilization, adult gain, and after top fatness, age loss. 1208 subjects 2-80 years old were studied in Maya a mixed population from Merida and Progreso (Yucatan, Mexico) measuring two fatfolds. A population of 7924 from Polish towns and villages was chosen measuring 10 fatfolds. The same pattern of fa…

It has been found that in small populations (400–500 persons) usually negative assortative mating in body height occurs, while in larger populations assortative mating is positive. The authors advance a hypothesis that there exists a species-specific module of similarity be…
