Ruptured Cinema as Visual Anthropology
In this essay, I offer close readings of the film shorts in two critically acclaimed film anthologies: 11"09'01, alternatively titled September 11, (2003) and From Ground Zero (2025). I argue that these two omnibus films can be understood as visual anthropology texts. Both films demonstrate the power of ruptured cinema and experimental film techniques to represent political violence and trauma. By drawing on visual and sound techniques that conde…
The Obligation Is the Point
This article examines how grassroots refugee-activists and ‘solidarians’ in Greece articulate a collectivist political vision and praxis of care through an expanding network of social obligation that upends narrow understandings of refugees’ ‘basic’ rights and moral obligations of care. The refugees draw on a wide range of universalising collectivist frames including Islamic, Anarcho-Marxist and Palestinian-liberationist frames to articulate visi…
Pedagogies of Resistance
The following interview with a collective of scholars describes the organization, conceptualization, and thematic framework of the online syllabus #IslamophobiaisRacism. The goals of the syllabus include theorizing anti-Muslim racism and developing strategies to combat white supremacy
Destabilizing Orthodoxy, De-territorializing the Anthropology of Islam
The category of “orthodoxy” remains one of the most vexed and under-theorized in religious studies. Although the common-sense usage of orthodoxy presumes it is static, fixed, and timeless, Muslims are at least as conscious of the diversity of interpretation and practice of Islam as are Western scholars of religion. Yet, Muslims are generally theologically invested in the universality and coherence of Islam. Contrary to critics who reduce the post…

Marriage in colour
In this study, marriage serves as the point of entry into discussions about race, religion, and identity in American mosques. The experience of minority status in the US shapes the ways Muslim immigrants construct difference. The intersections of race, class, gender and religion emerge as Arab and South Asian Muslim Americans talk about interracial marriage and preferences for lighter-skinned mates. Muslim American children of immigrants test the…
Lights, Camera, Suspension
In March 1996, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf (formerly Chris Jackson), Muslim guard of the Denver Nuggets, caused a stir when the NBA suspended him for refusing to stand during the national anthem. His stance, although consistent with the political orientation of many African-American Muslims, perplexed many immigrant Muslims unfamiliar with the long history of American dissent. By reexamining this controversy and the centrality of the media as the stage wh…
