Significant changes are underway to increase citizens’ and local actors’ participation in Germany’s energy transition. Drawing on qualitative interviews conducted in two municipalities in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, this paper illustrates how various approaches to social innovation in energy (…

  • Four pathways for energy citizenship initiatives to contribute to a more democratic European energy system

Open Access•Benjamin Schmid, Ariane Debourdeau et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of European Integration•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 15

The European Green Deal aims to put citizens at the heart of the European energy transition. Yet, their participation often falls short in terms of political involvement and self-governance. In contrast, the imaginary of energy democracy envisions democratising the energy system by involving citizens as political actors and assigns a key role to collectively organised energy citizenship initiatives in achieving this goal. However, it remains elus…

  • Assessing the impact of structural change in sustainable consumption and lifestyles research

    Open Access•Doris Fuchs, Ariane Debourdeau et al.•ARTICLE•Consumption and Society•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Scientific evidence highlights the pivotal role for structural change in pursuit of the sustainability transformation. A particular challenge for research on structural aspects of sustainable consumption and lifestyles, however, is the assessment of their impact. Especially quantifying the impact of structural change remains a serious problem. While some forms of structural change can be quantified, like the rate of building renovations, changes …

  • A conceptual typology of energy citizenship

    Open Access•Ariane Debourdeau, Martina Schäfer et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2024•Cited by: 8•References: 10

Energy citizenship is viewed as playing an essential role in the transition towards sustainable energy systems on a national and global scale. However, as a social science concept it is rather fuzzy and insufficiently elaborated. This paper proposes a conceptual typology of energy citizenship that aims for a balance between various competing understandings, in full awareness of ontological and disciplinary differences. The identification of conce…

    Ariane Debourdeau•ARTICLE•Politix•2011•Cited by: 5
