  • Skilled migrants and labour market integration

Open Access•Justin Van De Ven, Sarah Voitchovsky•ARTICLE•IZA Journal of Migration•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 13

Although many OECD countries use skilled migration to boost economic performance, there is surprisingly little direct empirical evidence concerning what effects historical initiatives in this area have had. This study estimates the effects of Australia's recent shift toward a 'hybrid approach' for managing economic migration, which increased the requirements for (supply-driven) independent skilled migrants at the same time that (demand-driven) em…

  • Occupational Downgrading and Wages of New Member States Immigrants to Ireland

    Open Access•Sarah Voitchovsky•ARTICLE•International Migration Review•2014•Cited by: 9•References: 22

This paper explores the importance of occupational downgrading in explaining the pay gap of New Member States (NMS) immigrants to Ireland by taking advantage of two data sources, the Census and the Survey on Income and Living Conditions (SILC). Relative to the empirical literature on this topic, theoretical arguments have a longer history and suggest numerous transmission channels through which inequality may affect aggregate production. Moreover, the alternative channels considered by the theoretical literature tend to imply different influences of inequality on growth. Perhaps unsurprisingly therefore, recent empirical efforts to capture the overall effect of inequality on growth usin…

    Open Access•A B Atkinson, Sarah Voitchovsky•ARTICLE•Economica•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 15

Much of the change in individual earnings has occurred at the top. This paper provides new evidence about the earnings distribution in the UK. The evidence is new in that it provides detail about what has happened within the top 10%, covering groups such as the top 1% and the top 0.5%. The aim is to set the recent rise in top earnings in historical perspective, and to make international comparisons. The evidence is new in that it covers the whole…
