  • A Lady's Bicycle

    Open Access•Helle Bundgaard•ARTICLE•Anthropology & Humanism•2019

This story concerns ethical dilemmas related to unintended consequences of fieldwork. The setting in a small Indian village works as a prism that offers an opportunity to reflect upon our practice as anthropologists. One of the challenges of fieldwork in a setting with relatively little material wealth is that objects that to the anthropologist are simply a matter of convenience represent resources otherwise out of reach and might lead to competi…

  • From rite of passage to a mentored educational activity: Fieldwork for master’s students of anthropology

    Open Access•Helle Bundgaard, Cecilie Rubow•ARTICLE•Learning and Teaching•2016

This article discusses the teaching of anthropological fieldwork during a period of comprehensive educational reforms in Danish universities. We trace widely held conceptions of fieldwork among master’s students of anthropology and the efforts they make to live up to what they assume to be classic fieldwork. We argue that the ideals of classic fieldwork too often fail to support the learning process when fieldwork is squeezed into the timeframe o…

  • Change management at a Danish university: The introduction of a common market for education

    Open Access•Helle Bundgaard•ARTICLE•Learning and Teaching•2012

This article discusses the approach to the management of change taken by a Danish university when introducing a university-wide market for education and it explores the different positions taken by some of the central stakeholders in one of the faculties involved. I argue that neither the inadequacies of a popular management model nor insufficient communication fully explain the problems with the change project. Based on strategy papers, memorand…

  • Children of Different Categories: Educational Practice and the Production of Difference in Danish Day-Care Institutions

    Helle Bundgaard, Eva Gull⊘v•ARTICLE•New Community•2006•Cited by: 1•References: 1

In this article we discuss the production of social distinctions within an institutional setting. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in a pre-school institution in Denmark, we focus on the interpersonal encounters between ethnic minority children, their parents and the staff. More specifically we explore an apparent paradox in daily practice where, on the one hand, staff attempt to mute differences between children on the assumption that all childre…

  • HVEM HAR ANSVARET? En immigrantfamilies møde med den danske institutionsverden

    Helle Bundgaard•ARTICLE•Tidsskriftet Antropologi•2002

The article presents an experience near analysis of events, which took place in connection with an immigrant child's start in a Danish pre-school. More specifically it deals with the inter-subjective meetings between the mother of the child and preschool staff. The analysis raises questions regarding Danish cultural assumptions about the appropriate relation between children and responsibility as well as the inviolability of the nuclear family.Th…

  • Contending Indian Art Worlds

    Open Access•Helle Bundgaard•ARTICLE•Journal of Material Culture•1999•References: 19

This article argues that the notion of a singular art world will have to give way to that of 'art worlds', the point being, as Myers has suggested, 'to imagine conditions of cultural heterogeneity, rather than those of consensus, as the common situation of cultural interpretation' (1994: 13). The argument is based on a detailed analysis of the contending practice and discourse of two - of the several - groups involved with a traditional craft in …
