New frontiers in the platform economy: Place, Sociality, and the Embeddedness of Platform Mobilities
The aim of this special issue is to bring together ethnographic scholarship on last-mile logistics work, sometimes called ‘platform labour’, into a more direct conversation with the mobilities framework. The introduction argues that although platform mobilities often employ a rhetoric of unrestricted flow across time and space, the movements of people and technologies associated with them are in fact entangled in the social, political, economic, …
Humanly Extended Automation or the Future of Work Seen through Amazon Patents
Amazon's projects for future automation contribute to anxieties about the marginalization of living labor in warehousing. Yet, a systematic analysis of patents owned by Amazon suggests that workers are not about to disappear from the warehouse floor. Many patents portray machines that increase worker surveillance and work rhythms. Others aim at incorporating workers' activities into machinery to rationalize the labor process in an ever more perva…
Platform Labor and In/Formality: Organization among Motorcycle Taxi Drivers in Bandung, Indonesia
There is a growing consensus that emerging forms of flexibilized platform labor (e.g., Upwork, Uber) necessitate new forms of mobilization to resist exploitation, given workers’ atomization and lack of statutory rights. However, Euro‐American concerns about radical reductions in labor security are countered by workforces in the “near South,” where precarious, unprotected work has long been the norm. I explore incrementalist organization in motorc…
Molecular characterization of phototrophic microorganisms in the forefield of a receding glacier in the Swiss Alps
Recently deglaciated areas are ideal environments to study soil formation and primary microbial succession where phototrophic microorganisms may play a role as primary producers. The aim of our study was to investigate the cyanobacterial and green algal community composition in three different successional stages of the Damma glacier forefield in the Swiss Alps using 16S rDNA and ITS rDNA clone libraries. Cyanobacterial target sequences varied al…
