Reading
The meaning of reading is contested among various stakeholders. Shifts in nomenclature from reading to literacy have occurred since the late twentieth century, and now reading as an academic field, area of professional practice, and site of policy interest is often referred to as literacy. Within literacy studies, two contrasting, ideological views of reading predominate: the autonomous view, which characterizes reading as a technical skill invol…
The National as Global, the Global as National: Citizenship Education in the Context of Migration and Globalization
English Is Out There-You Have to Get with the Program: Linguistic Instrumentalism, Global Citizenship Education, and English-Language Voluntourism
English-language voluntourism is a practice in which Global North, often young and inexperienced, volunteers teach English in the Global South on a short-term basis as a form of alternative travel. Like other forms of volunteer tourism, English-language voluntourism is characterized as global citizenship education for visiting volunteers and as development assistance for host communities. Drawing upon data collected as a part of a larger, multisi…
Volunteer tourism in Romania as/for global citizenship
This paper examines short-term, volunteer tourism in Romania as a form of education for global citizenship. Drawing upon data collected through participant observation and qualitative interviews with numerous stakeholders, we argue that global citizenship education in this programme not only aligns with neoliberal governmentality, as others have deftly pointed out vis-à-vis volunteer tourism more broadly, but also has troubling implications for v…
Ambiguous Aims: English-language Voluntourism as Development
English-language voluntourism is a practice whereby people from the Global North teach English in the Global South as an alternative form of travel and means of development assistance. As part of a larger, multisited ethnography, I investigate how in-service and former English-language voluntourism program participants frame short-term English language teaching as development. Findings suggest that the relations among volunteer tourism, English, …
English for the global”: Discourses in/of English-language voluntourism
Drawing upon the notion of hyperglobalism and critical perspectives on English as an international language, this study examines the ways in which English language teaching via volunteer tourism (i.e. English-language voluntourism) is represented and legitimated as an altruistic practice among organizational sponsors and in the talk of current and former volunteers. Data were collected as a part of a larger, multi-sited ethnography that included …
Student Teaching in the Contact Zone: Learning to Teach Amid Multiple Interests in a Vocational English Class
This case study investigates the decision making of Joni, a high school English teacher, during her student teaching in an Applied Communications II teaching assignment, comprised of students in the lowest tier of a four-track senior English curriculum. This course served as a "contact zone" for a set of competing interests: Joni's stated beliefs about effective teaching based on her experiences as a student, the Applied Communications curriculum…
