The Effect of Age at School Entry on Educational and Labor Market Outcomes in Brazil: A Regression Discontinuity Analysis
We examine the effects of a delayed school entrance on years of schooling, college admission, and early labor market outcomes. Regression discontinuity design estimates reveal that students born immediately after the school entry cutoff date progress faster through the school years but attain the same average years of schooling at the end of the school cycle as those born just before the cutoff. Late school entrance increases the likelihood of co…
Length of candidate lists and political careers: Quasi-experimental evidence from Brazil
This paper provides causal estimates of the effects of increases in the size of candidate lists on the political careers of newcomers to the political arena. We explore an exogenous discontinuity in district magnitude that allows parties to expand their candidate lists in the Brazilian open-list local elections and find that the additional candidacies are allocated to weaker candidates, mainly newcomers, who end up occupying a significant share o…
Are newcomers financially responsible? Evidence from close elections in Brazilian Municipalities
This paper examines how mayors’ political experience impacts fiscal outcomes. Using a regression discontinuity design in highly-contested elections in Brazilian municipalities, we estimate the differences in fiscal performance between newcomers and veteran politicians. We find that municipalities governed by mayors who never won an election before experience a worse budget balance and a substantial increase in public investments. This difference …
Sanitation conditions and education outcomes in Brazilian municipalities
This article investigates the effect of sanitation on education at the municipal level in Brazilian cities. We measure the effect of the share of people living in households with access to piped water and a bathroom on educational indicators of the population aged 6–14. To take care of the well‐recognized endogeneity between sanitation and education, we estimate a panel‐data instrumental variable model. We use the municipalities that had their sa…
Brazilian cohorts with potential for life-course studies: A scoping review
OBJECTIVE: To identify the Brazilian cohorts that started either in the prenatal period or at birth, to describe their characteristics and the explored variables, and to map the cohorts with potential for studies on early determinants on health and the risk of falling ill on later stages of the life cycle. METHODS: A scoping review was carried out. The articles were searched in the electronic databases PubMed and Virtual Health Library (VHL). The…
Estimating the causal effects of private health insurance in Brazil: Evidence from a regression kink design
Brazil's unified health system: The first 30 years and prospects for the future
Estimando o retorno à educação do Brasil considerando a legislação educacional brasileira como um instrumento
Estimating the return to education the Brazilian legislation of education as an instrument considering. This paper aims to estimate the impact of education on wages in Brazil. GDP, Population, and the number of schools in the state and year when the individual was born as instruments for his education level were used. In this context, the paper consider other instrument, the Brazilian education Law 5692 of 1971. The results show that the Law 5692…
ICT and Productivity in Developing Countries: New Firm-Level Evidence from Brazil and India
This paper uses a unique new data set on manufacturing firms in Brazil and India to estimate production functions, augmented by information and communications technology (ICT). We find a strong positive association between ICT capital and productivity in both countries that is robust to several different specification tests. The paper also breaks new ground when using the Indian data to investigate the effect of the institutional and policy envir…
Opportunistic and partisan election cycles in Brazil: New evidence at the municipal level
The effects of trade liberalization on productivity growth in Brazil: Competition or Technology
This paper examines the effects of trade liberalization on productivity growth in Brazil. In contrast with the previous literature, we examine whether this relationship is driven by product or input market effects, by including both output and input tariffs in firm-level productivity regressions and allowing for imperfect competition in the product market. The results show that the reductions of input tariffs were more important to explain the pr…
The Structure of Worker Compensation in Brazil, with a Comparison to France and the United States
We employ a comprehensive linked employer-employee data set for Brazil to analyze wage determinants and compare results to Abowd, Kramarz, Margolis and Troske (2001) for French and U.S. manufacturing. While returns to human capital variables in Brazilian manufacturing exceed those of the other countries, occupation and gender differentials are similar. The worker characteristics component of individual compensation accounts for much of the greate…
Fiscal policy and reelection in Brazilian municipalities
Os determinantes empíricos da felicidade no Brasil
This paper investigates the role that economic variables play in the determination of happiness, using reported happiness as a proxy to individual well-being. We use microdata extracted from the World Values Survey for five countries, emphasizing the Brazilian case. Our findings suggest that there is a positive and significant correlation between happiness and income. Unemployment seems to have an even higher impact, arising as a large source of …
Is the Consumer Sector Competitive in the U.K.? A Test Using Household-Level Demand Elasticities and Firm-Level Price Equations
This article tests the hypothesis of perfect competition in the consumer nondurables sector of the U.K. economy. First, it uses household-level data to estimate time-varying price elasticities of demand for disaggregated commodity groups. U.S. product prices are used as instruments for U.K. prices in the demand equation. Then it matches the product definitions to the Standard Industry Classification and uses firm-level data, combined with the est…
R&D and Unionism: Comparative Evidence from British Companies and Establishments
U.S. research has found that unionization adversely affects research and development investment, consistent with the view that labor unions' rent-seeking activities act as a tax on innovation. In this U.K. study, preliminary analysis of two datasets (a cross-section of plants and a company panel for the years 1983-90) shows the same negative correlation. This correlation completely disappears, however, when controls are included for such factors …
