Notes on the making of an aspirational space-time in the U.S. public university
Drawing on ethnographic analysis of experimental undergraduate career workshops at a U.S. public university, we consider what galvanizes aspiration formation for precariously situated young people working toward post-graduation life. Exploring children and young people as emotional suspects
Potentials of care
This article examines middle class children's and parents' complex engagements with contemporary practices of cultivation, care and surveillance focused on children's social and emotional capacities and differences. I argue that such girls' subject-making statements of aspiration and gendered practices of self-cultivation reflect their emotively charged negotiations of race and class differentiated ideals of feminine success, their exper…
Managing risk and 'giving back
This article focuses on the formation of aspirations among low-income, 'at-risk' Latino youth attending a state and privately funded Biotechnology Academy within a public high school in San Jose, California. I identify a pattern of aspiration among Academy youth that contradicts the goal of individual advancement in the regional information economy stressed in the Academy: the desire to give back to a 'community' or to the nation via public servi…
Righteous DopefiendandAids, Sex, and Culture
This essay offers a comparative reading of two ethnographies, Ida Susser's AIDS, Sex, and Culture: Global Politics and Survival in Southern Africa (2009 Susser, I. 2009. AIDS, Sex, and Culture: Global Politics and Survival in Southern Africa, Oxford: Wiley-Blackwell. [Crossref] , [Google Scholar]), a multisited text focused on community responses to dynamics of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment in Southern Africa, and Philippe Bourgois and Jeff S…
