  • Sequenced Place and Goal components express Source of motion

    Open Access•Maja Robbers•ARTICLE•Linguistik Online•2026

This explorative study discusses a hitherto underdescribed Source of motion expression type that is based on sequencing a Place-denoting component with a Goal-denoting component. Nine languages that show this bipartite coding strategy are discussed in detail, and are compared with regard to eventhood criteria, such as shared TAM marking. This type of Source expression shows that some languages make do without dedicated Source verbs and without gr…

  • A variety-driven approach to Goal-Source (a)symmetries

    Open Access•Maja Robbers•ARTICLE•Language Typology and Universals•2026

This comparative study presents an overview of Place/Goal/Source coding strategies in 35 languages and discusses asymmetries across different types of Ground arguments. The genealogically balanced sample was created using a novel computer-assisted approach which detects information-dense descriptions of languages. The comparison of data uncovers a variety of coding patterns across and within languages that leads to general Goal-Source asymmetry. …

  • Bibliographic bias and information-density sampling

    Maja Robbers, Harald Hammarström•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2024

In the present paper, we discuss the bibliographical limits for commonplace typological studies and address how to estimate the resources available for an in-depth study using a full-text corpus of grammatical descriptions, considering different metalanguages, temporal stages of description, theoretical perspectives, and quality of grammatical descriptions. In a case study on motion, we illustrate the above perspectives and show how computer-assi…

  • River-based and egocentric spatial orientation in Yine

    Open Access•Maja Robbers•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2022

In linguistic studies on spatial reference frames, South American languages are still underrepresented. This explorative study offers a qualitative discussion of strategies that were found to encode location and orientation of objects in Yine, an Amazonian language of Peru. Geocentric and egocentric frames were attested as equally dominant strategies to provide spatial information in a picture-matching task, the results of which are split by age …

  • Expansion by migration and diffusion by contact is a source to the global diversity of linguistic nominal categorization systems

Open Access•Marc Allassonnière-Tang, Olof Lundgren et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2021

Languages of diverse structures and different families tend to share common patterns if they are spoken in geographic proximity. This convergence is often explained by horizontal diffusibility, which is typically ascribed to language contact. In such a scenario, speakers of two or more languages interact and influence each other’s languages, and in this interaction, more grammaticalized features tend to be more resistant to diffusion compared to …
