The Soul on Trial
This paper revisits the fragment of Democritus in which the body accuses the soul of having led it into a poor state (68 B 159 DK). While previous scholars have reconstructed its content, I argue that there is more to be explored regarding its form and intention. The paper reassesses the evidence on the Epicurean analysis of language, which so far has received two kinds of interpretation. One is the “extensionalist” view, which supposes that the Epicureans developed a theory of meaning.
