  • Rethinking the Dead Donor Rule

    Open Access•Jake Greenblum, Timothy Aylsworth•ARTICLE•Bioethics•2026

Normothermic Regional Perfusion (NRP) is an organ procurement method that has the potential to save lives by improving the number and quality of transplanted organs. Nevertheless, critics have argued that NRP is unethical because it violates the dead donor rule (DDR), which many regard as the fundamental principle underpinning the permissibility of organ donation. In response, proponents of NRP have tried to demonstrate that donors who undergo th…

    Open Access•Timothy Aylsworth, Clinton Castro•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Technology•2025

Our (2024) paper argues that undergraduate students have moral reasons to refrain from using LLMs to write some of their papers. Our argument is premised on the idea that every person ought to set the aim of safeguarding and promoting their autonomy and that the typical undergraduate student shows they have not set the end in question if they use ChatGPT to write their humanities papers.Laura Gorrieri argues that our view goes too far.She claims t…

  • Should I Use ChatGPT to Write My Papers

    Open Access•Timothy Aylsworth, Clinton Castro•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Technology•2024

We argue that students have moral reasons to refrain from using chatbots such as ChatGPT to write certain papers. We begin by showing why many putative reasons to refrain from using chatbots fail to generate compelling arguments against their use in the construction of these papers. Many of these reasons rest on implausible principles, hollowed out conceptions of education, or impoverished accounts of human agency. They also overextend to cases w…

  • Is There a Duty to Be a Digital Minimalist

Open Access•Timothy Aylsworth, Clinton Castro•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Philosophy•2021

The harms associated with wireless mobile devices (e.g. smartphones) are well documented. They have been linked to anxiety, depression, diminished attention span, sleep disturbance, and decreased relationship satisfaction. Perhaps what is most worrying from a moral perspective, however, is the effect these devices can have on our autonomy. In this article, we argue that there is an obligation to foster and safeguard autonomy in ourselves, and we …

  • Bolstering the Keystone

    Timothy Aylsworth•ARTICLE•Archiv für Geschichte der…•2020

In this paper, I give an explanation and defense of Kant’s claim that we cannot comprehend how freedom is possible. I argue that this is a significant point that has been underappreciated in the secondary literature. My conclusion has a variety of implications both for Kant scholars and for those interested in Kantian ideas more generally. Most notably, if Kant is right that there are principled reasons why freedom is beyond our comprehension, th…
