The perception of poverty in a context of fragility – the case of Guinea-Bissau
This article examines subjective poverty in Guinea-Bissau, one of Africa’s most fragile states, using survey data from 190 households. We investigate how individuals perceive their own deprivation and identify the factors most strongly associated with these perceptions. Given the predominance of ordinal variables and non-normal distributions, we apply nonparametric methods (Spearman’s ρ and Kendall’s τ) to test correlations. Results show that hou…
Calculation of the Rate of Surplus Value of the Portuguese Economy
This article estimates the rate of surplus value of the Portuguese economy between 1995 and 2022 based on Marx’s labor theory of value. Drawing on national accounts and input-output tables, we calculate the monetary expression of labor time (MELT) and trace its evolution alongside working hours, real wages, and productivity. Overcoming the barriers
Cross-border cooperation is a major instrument of European policy to overcome the barriers posed by national borders and correcting regional imbalances. But the question of whether it is leading to the convergence of cross-border regions (CBRs) is still open for debate, given the significant heterogeneity of borders and the localized and spatially bound nature of many border effects. This article analyses the beta and sigma convergences in GDP pe…
Impact of local sports policies in the prevalence of cardiovascular disease
According to the World Health Organization, 17 million people die every year of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), particularly heart attacks and strokes. More than half of all deaths across the Europe are caused by CVDs. 80 % of premature deaths from these causes could be avoided by controlling the main risk factors: tobacco, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity. Local authorities provide sport and recreation facilities to their communities. They …
