  • Comprehensive epidemiological assessment of global opioid use disorders over the past three decades

    Open Access•Le-Yan Ma, Le‐Yan Ma et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Public Health•2026

Global burden of opioid use disorders (OUD) has risen substantially, posing major socioeconomic challenges. Cross-spatiotemporal disease burden comparison using data sourced from Global Burden of Disease 2021. We comprehensively assessed OUD’s epidemiological burden using multiple metrics and the socio-demographic index (SDI), estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs), and integrated estimates through Bayesian meta-regression. Disability-adjust…

  • Comprehensive evaluation of worldwide lung cancer burden with epidemiological forecasts through mid-century

Open Access•Jing Tu, Shuang Tao et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Public Health•2026

Background Lung cancer remains the world’s heaviest societal health burden. Objective To provide 2022 global lung cancer estimates and predict trends through Mid-century.Methods Based on GLOBOCAN 2022, the burden and epidemic trend of lung cancer in 2022 and number of new cases and deaths by 2050 were analyzed and predicted. Results In 2022, a total of 2,480,675 new cases of lung cancer and 1,817,469 related deaths were reported worldwide. Incidenc…

  • Cancer burden and risk in the Chinese population aged 55 years and above

Open Access•Teng‐Yu Gao, Teng-Yu Gao et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2024

Background: We analysed the cancer burden among elderly Chinese people over the age of 55 years and compared them to USA and Western Europe to explore the cancer model in China. Methods: We retrieved data on 29 cancers with 34 risk factors from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease database to evaluate the cancer burden in Chinese elderly individuals aged 55 years and older. We then used the age-standardised incidence rate (ASIR), age-standardised de…

  • Disease burden of Aids in last 30-year period and its predicted level in next 25-years based on the global burden disease 2019

    Open Access•Teng‐Yu Gao, Teng-Yu Gao et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

The global ASIR decreased from 1990 to 2019. Higher incidence and death rates were observed in the lower SDI region, indicating a greater susceptibility to AIDS among women and < 15 years old. This underscores the urgent need for increased resources to combat AIDS in this region, with focused attention on protecting women and < 15 years old as priority groups. The AIDS epidemic remained severe in sub-Saharan Africa. Projections for the next 25 ye…

  • The burden of brain and central nervous system cancers in Asia from 1990 to 2019 and its predicted level in the next twenty-five years

    Open Access•Xin Liu, Lin-Can Cheng et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

The study identified an increasing trend in morbidity, mortality and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), with differences in age-standardized morbidity rates for different population groups. In addition, it is noteworthy that the burden of disease (as measured by disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs)) is higher among women in Central Asia compared with other regions. ASIR will continue to increase over the next 25 years, with the increase in…

  • Global, regional, and national trends of syphilis from 1990 to 2019

    Open Access•Yuting Tao, Yu-Ting Tao et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

The incidence and ASIR of syphilis increased worldwide from 1990 to 2019. Only the regions with high and high-middle sociodemographic indices showed an increase in the ASIR. Moreover, the ASIR increased among males but decreased among females. The age-standardized death rate and DALY rate both declined worldwide. The increase in the global ASIR of syphilis is a challenge
