  • Gendering Labour in the Age of Ai

    Open Access•Elena Gapova•ARTICLE•Topos•2023

With the rise of post-industrial society, an ever bigger share of work takes the form of immaterial labour. While organizations of post-industrial economy continue to be gendered, the mechanisms for reproducing gender disparities are different than those in the traditional career path of the industrial era. Gender, which is the anchoring of a certain group of individuals in a specific sphere of social activities, gets reproduced as the segregatio…

  • Politics, Activism and Trolling on the Russian Internet

Open Access•Galina Miazhevich, Mariëlle Wijermars et al.•ARTICLE•AoIR Selected Papers of Internet…•2020

In the years that have passed since the social media powered protest movement of 2011-2012, the Russian government has dramatically expanded its restrictions on the Internet, while simultaneously consolidating its grip on traditional media. The Internet, which long provided a space for alternative media and free speech to blossom, is becoming increasingly restricted by a growing corpus of legislation and expanding state surveillance. With legally…

  • Mobilisierung in Belarus: Klasse, Staatsbürgerschaft, Gender. Class, citizenship, gender

    Elena Gapova•ARTICLE•Osteuropa•2020

In Belarus, there was a civic revolution in the summer of 2020. The supporters of this awakening are members of a new social class: highly educated, mobile people who no longer work in the state sector and who have no paternalistic expectations, but who yearn for a life of self-responsibility, honesty and self-respect. They want to be state citizens in the emphatic sense. In this Belarusian revolution, women are playing the most important role. W…

  • The Land under the White Wings”: The Romantic Landscaping of Socialist Belarus

    Open Access•Elena Gapova•ARTICLE•Rethinking Marxism•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 4

This essay explores the imaginative transformation of quintessentially socialist Soviet Byelorussia into a romantic and sacred “land of castles.” The romantic landscaping, performed in the 1960s by intellectuals and especially the writer Uladzimir Karatkevich, changed the meaning of the land by creating a site parallel to the socialist republic, the land of intellectual and moral pursuits that can sustain life’s meaning. This romantic shift also …

  • Becoming Visible in The Digital Age: The class and media dimensions of the Pussy Riot affair

    Elena Gapova•ARTICLE•Feminist Media Studies•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 4

The Pussy Riot affair has been represented in Western media as a feminist plight for rights. This study demonstrates that this interpretation disregards the social context of the case and the negative reactions of the Russian public. I argue that the rejection of Pussy Riot by a large segment of post-Soviet society is related to two factors. First, the group's members practice media activism and belong with new social movements of the post-indust…

    Open Access•Elena Gapova•ARTICLE•Nationalities Papers•2002

“Liberal democracy, in truth, is the political arrangement under which capital thrives best.” Slavoj Zizek “It's the economy, stupid!” (Slogan on the wall of Bill Clinton's headquarters during his presidential campaign in 1992). On 9 September 2001 presidential elections were held in Belarus for the first time since Alexandar Lukashenka became the president in 1994. To remain in power for seven years instead of the four for which he had been elec…
