  • Before and After: Dogs’ Biographies Along and Across the Mexico-US Border

    Open Access•Iván Sandoval-Cervantes•ARTICLE•Catalyst Feminism Theory…•2025

In the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juárez, numerous animal protection organizations seek to rescue street dogs that have been abandoned or abused. Many of these organizations seek to place previously abused dogs in “forever homes” in the United States. To accomplish this, the dogs often go through a transformation that transforms them into objects of care, making them adoptable. In this article, I analyze how narratives and photos used in socia…

  • Gaining Voice through Injury: Voice and Corporeality in Animal Rights Activism in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico

    Open Access•Iván Sandoval-Cervantes•ARTICLE•Cultural Anthropology•2023•References: 11

Activism in favor of non-human animals is on the rise throughout Mexico despite ongoing and episodic violence. Activists, also known as animalistas, represent themselves as the "voice" of non-human animals as they seek rights and well-being for animals. In Ciudad Juárez, a border city once considered the most dangerous city in the world (2008-2012), animalistas engage in complex ways with non-human bodies as they seek to "speak" for them. This ar…

  • Navigating the city: Internal migration of Oaxacan indigenous women

    Iván Sandoval-Cervantes•ARTICLE•New Community•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 25

The relationship between migration and gender roles has received increased attention in recent decades but most of the literature has focused on transnational migration while the relationships between transnational and internal migration, and gender roles and internal migration have not been widely studied. In this paper, I analyse internal migration as a ‘transborder experience’. I argue that indigenous women from Zegache who engage in internal …

  • Uncertain Futures: The Unfinished Houses of Undocumented Migrants in Oaxaca, Mexico

    Open Access•Iván Sandoval-Cervantes•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•2017•Cited by: 21•References: 26

Migration often leads to new transnational patterns of consumption, because migrants create new ways in which they, and their families, relate to material objects. The literature on migration and materiality has documented migrants constructing and reconstructing their identities, and creating relationships based on the acquisition of material artifacts. However, little is known about the affective component involved in the construction of migran…
