  • Preliminary results of the analysis targeting perimortem cut marks from the mass grave 3 connected to the battle of Mohacs, 1526 CE

Open Access•Viktor Vig, Árpád Szabó et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: This year the 29th of August is the 500th anniversary of one of the most decisive battles of Late Medieval Europe. Five mass graves are known to be directly connected to the Battle of Mohács from the Ottoman expansion era. The pits contain human remains belonging to members of the defeated army of the Kingdom of Hungary. Between August of 2020 and October of 2022, mass grave 3 was completely excavated in three seasons revealing high n…

  • Examination of perimortem injuries to the postcranial skeleton in the human bone material from mass grave 3 associated with the battle of Mohacs (August 29, 1526 CE)

Open Access•Viktor Vig, Fanni Gellai et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: The mass graves linked to the Battle of Mohacs (1526) are located at the Mohacs National Memorial Site in southern Hungary. Historical sources suggest that around 2,000 prisoners were executed after the battle and buried in these graves. After excavations in 1960 and 1976, mass grave 3 was re-excavated between 2020 and 2022, enabling detailed archaeological and anthropological analyses. Objective: To conduct an osteoarchaeological ana…

  • Preliminary results of the paleopathological analysis of the human skeletal remains from mass grave 4 at the Mohacs National Memorial Site (1526 CE), Hungary

Open Access•Réka Kocsmár, Lili Vágvölgyi et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: The Battle of Mohacs in 1526 was one of the most decisive events in Central European history. The osteological material recovered from the five mass graves located at the Mohacs National Memorial Site is associated with this historical event. Between 2020 and 2024, two of these mass graves were excavated to gain insight into the individuals buried within them. Objective: The aim of the present study is to provide a preliminary report …

  • Bioarchaeological profiling and digital facial reconstruction of individual no. 95 from Mohacs mass grave 3

Open Access•Árpád Szabó, Luca Kis et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: Bioarchaeological investigations aim to reconstruct the biological profiles of past populations through the systematic analysis of human skeletal remains. Facial reconstruction is a specialized approach that complements these analyses by providing visual representations of historical individuals. Objective: To present the comprehensive biological and facial reconstruction of individual No. 95, recovered from a mass grave associated wi…

  • Execution-indicative sharp-force injuries in Mohacs mass grave 3 – Forensic medical aspects

Open Access•Tímea Mai, György Pálfi et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: One of the five known mass graves associated with the Battle of Mohacs preserves the remains of approximately 370 individuals. Preliminary forensic observations suggested that many of the fatal injuries were more consistent with execution than battlefield combat. Objective: To identify patterns of perimortem trauma and evaluate the hypothesis of mass execution. Materials and methods: A representative sample of 45 individuals was selec…

  • Preliminary results of the paleopathological analysis of the human skeletal remains from mass grave 4 at the Mohacs National Memorial Site (1526 CE), Hungary

Open Access•Lili Vágvölgyi, Réka Kocsmár et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: At the Battle of Mohacs (1526 CE), the Christian army was defeated by an Ottoman force nearly three times its size. Historical sources indicate that during the battle, captives were taken, and about 2 thousand captives were executed two days later. Objective: To better understand the fate of these victims, we examined patterns of perimortem trauma in the skeletons of the mass grave IV (237 individuals) at the Mohacs National Memorial …

  • Integrating geoinformatics and anthropological techniques for the resolution of complex commingled skeletal assemblages. The mass grave 3 at the Mohacs National Memorial Site

Open Access•Marcos De Andres Montero, Oszkár Schütz et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: This study outlines a methodology for the excavation and anthropological examination of partially commingled human remains from Mass grave 3 (MG3), associated with the 1526 Battle of Mohacs. Objective: The identity and circumstances of the demise of the individuals found in MG3 are the 2 main scientific questions. These can be answered after rearranging the disarticulated remains. Materials and methods: The presented methodology aims …

  • Az állkapocscsont fejlődési rendellenességeinek előfordulása a mohácsi III. tömegsír csontanyagában

Open Access•Lili Vágvölgyi, Réka Kocsmár et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2025

The development of the mandible is a complex process influenced by different environmental and genetic factors. These factors can cause changes in the morphology of the mandible, manifesting in anatomical variations and developmental anomalies. These alterations can be diagnosed during the examination of osteological materials. Our research focused on these characteristics in the human bone material of the mass grave III of the Mohács National Me…

  • A Mohácsi Nemzeti Emlékhely IV. tömegsírja feltárásának biológiai antropológiai megfigyelései

Open Access•Réka Kocsmár, Lili Vágvölgyi et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2024

The excavation campaign of Mass Grave No. IV. started at the National Memorial Park of Mohács in June 2024. The well-organized, intensive archaeological and field anthropological work was carried out in cooperation between the Department of Archaeology, Janus Pannonius Museum and the Department of Biological Anthropology, University of Szeged.
