An Unexplored 11th Century Gospel Lectionary in Sydney
This paper draws attention to an unexplored document of historical significance, namely the Codex Angus. It is a 1000-year-old Greek parchment lectionary held by the archive of the Sydney University’s Rare Book and Special Collections Library. The codex was brought from Germany to Australia in 1936 and although at that time it was lauded in The Sydney Morning Herald as ‘of marvellous beauty of workmanship, and in perfect condition,’ it remains al…
The Deissmann Ostraca after 75 Years in Sydney
This paper has two main parts. It begins with the first detailed account of how a collection of 87 Greek ostraca (i.e. inscribed pottery fragments), once belonging to the German theologian Gustav Adolf Deissmann, a leading Greek philologist, came to Sydney. The collection was destined to go elsewhere – were it not for the serendipitous convergence of Deissmann’s forced retirement under the Nazis, a much travelled German Egyptologist, an ailing Sc…

Gustaf Adolf Deissmann (1866-1937)
Whether in philology, lexicography, archaeology, or international reconciliation, the German theologian Gustav Adolf Deissmann was an intellectual force to be reckoned with. As New Testament Professor at Heidelberg (1897-1908) – where he produced most of his Greek linguistic works – he became the ‘Father of New Testament Philology’ and was the first one to prove the Greek Bible’s vernacular Koine, by comparing its language with that in the papyri…
