  • The Deesis on Van Eyck's Ghent Altarpiece

    Open Access•Joris GELDHOF•ARTICLE•Studia Liturgica•2022

The core argument in this article is that it is meaningful and revealing to look at a world-famous medieval piece of art, in this case, the Ghent Altarpiece, to raise questions relevant for contemporary liturgical theology. The article starts with an evocation of where and how the Altarpiece is today exhibited for the public, and continues by elucidating the historical context for which it was created. This is followed by a brief interpretation o…

  • Homily at the 2019 Congress Eucharist

    Open Access•Joris GELDHOF•ARTICLE•Studia Liturgica•2020

This homily given at the beginning of this article was pronounced in the afternoon of August 9 at the 2019 Congress Eucharist of Societas Liturgica. The liturgy was celebrated in the chapel of Ushaw College just outside of the city of Durham, UK. It was the memorial feast of Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein)

  • Penetration—Permeation—Fermentation

    Open Access•Joris GELDHOF•ARTICLE•Studia Liturgica•2020

The present contribution seeks to address the following fundamental questions at the crossroads of liturgical theology and metaphysics: How is liturgy in the world? What is the fundamental mode of being of the phenomena, events, actions, and experiences commonly referred to as Christian liturgy? How can people be in the liturgy and the liturgy in them? Or is liturgy only something that is performed and not something human beings can become (part …

  • Thought and the Eucharist

    Joris GELDHOF•ARTICLE•Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses•2010

This article first presents and discusses the five philosophical models which Jean Greisch distinguished in his seminal study on the philosophy of religion (Le buisson ardent et les Lumières de la raison, Paris, 2002-2004). It then asks whether the same reasoning can be extrapolated to the theology of the Eucharist. Jean Greisch appears to favor a combination of phenomenology and hermeneutics, because this approach is both the most promising for …

  • “ Cogitor Ergo Sum”

    Open Access•Joris GELDHOF•ARTICLE•Modern Theology•2005

This paper examines the arguments on the basis of which Franz Baader (1765–1841), the almost forgotten contemporary of Hegel and Schelling, rejected Descartes’ philosophy so decisively, that, at the end of his life, he wrote to a friend that he passionately wanted to put an end to Cartesianism. I defend the thesis that Baader's hostility to Cartesianism was ultimately grounded in a theological idea, and that his holistic and emphatically Christia…
