Observations on the unusual agonistic behaviour of two sympatric species of birds Rüppell’s weaver and Abyssinian white-eye in southern Oman
Sir,In this report we describe the agonistic interaction observed between two species of passeriform birds, Ruppell’s weaver, Ploceus galbula Ruppell, 1840 (Ploceidae) and Abyssinian white-eye, Zos
Evaluation of treated wastewater produced by five different Sewage Treatment Plants using three different technologies - Oman experience
The quality of treated wastewater produced in five different Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) using three different technologies, Conventional Activated Sludge (CAS), Extended Aeration System and Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) was evaluated. The CAS was the best; it had the highest general efficiency (EG) with a value of 96.6%. The STPs using EAS had maintenance problems. The MBR is relatively less efficient. In order to get treated wastewater of good q…
The physical–chemical environment and benthic invertebrate assemblages of two thermal springs located on carbonate and ophiolite rocks in northern Oman
The paper compares the physical and chemical environments and associated benthic invertebrate assemblages of two thermal streams with different geology in Oman. Nakhal Thawarah is a thermal spring originating in carbonate rocks. Mur-Fayha has its origin in igneous ophiolite rocks. The main physical and chemical parameters that contribute to the differences are water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, chloride, sulph…
A preliminary study on the status of invasive palm squirrels in Oman
Palm squirrels of the genus Funambulus are reported as invasive in the Sultanate of Oman for the first time. These squirrels have been recorded in seven locations in northern Oman contributing to a total of 11 records. Seven records were of the Five-striped northern palm squirrel, Funambulus pennantii (Wroughton, 1905) and species identification was indeterminate for four records. Funambulus pennantii was supposed to be the only species in United…
Contamination assessment of heavy metals in the soils of an abandoned copper mine in Lasail, Northern Oman
Abandoned mine areas exhibit heavy metal contamination. This severely reduces the soil quality. This paper concerns the assessment of soils near an abandoned copper mine in Lasail, northern Oman. Seventy-two soil samples were collected and analysed for heavy metals using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The extent of heavy metal pollution was evaluated based on the geo-accumulation index (Igeo), enrichment facto…
Misconception, misinformation, misdirection and misplaced aggression – a case study of a murdered Macqueen’s Bustard
Photographs of a ‘spy raptor’ killed while flying over the India-Pakistan border in Rajasthan were disseminated over the social media. The ‘raptor’ was a Macqueen’s Bustard, Chlamydotis macqueenii carrying a satellite transmitter assembly and a red leg ring with an inscription K34. The National Avian Research Centre (NARC), Abu Dhabi, has extensively studied the biology of C. macqueenii. The killed bustard was one of the captive-bred bustards par…
The amphibians and reptiles of Oman and the UAE
In the year 2000 while I chaired the subcommittee for Terrestrial and Freshwater Biodiversity in Oman, we sorely felt the need for a comprehensive review of the Amphibians and Reptiles [1]. Dr Andr
Sighting of a ringed juvenile Eastern Imperial Eagle, Aquila heliaca in Dhofar Governorate, southern Oman
Venomous terrestrial snakes of the Middle East
This book is likely to remain as one of the major contributions to the knowledge on terrestrial venomous snakes of the Middle East.Snakes of the Middle East have attracted the attention of several
The ecological status of juniper woodlands in Al Jabal Al Akhdar, northern mountains of Oman
There are changes in the local distribution of the juniper, Juniperus seravschanica woodlands as a result of conflicts between biodiversity conservation and human activities in Al Jabal Al Akhdar, Sultanate of Oman. Woodland degradation and poor regeneration of juniper trees are attributed to many factors. Four zones, each with 10 plots and each plot with an area of 10,000 sq m were studied in detail at different altitudes to evaluate the status …
Studying captive animals – a workbook of methods in behaviour, welfare and ecology
On the use of biotechnology for biodiversity conservation in arid countries with special reference to Oman
The paper considers the possible uses of biotechnology for biodiversity conservation in arid countries with special reference to Oman, wherever appropriate. The application of biotechnology for biodiversity conservation is poorly understood in the arid regions and, therefore, there is a need for strategies to link these two areas. There are four categories of challenges, (i) Environmental, (ii) Scientific, (ii) Socioeconomic and (iv) Administrati…

Pallikaranai in peril – an appeal for the conservation of a wetland in southern India
Are we losing Al Jabal Al Akhdar? An environmental evaluation of an arid mountain ecosystem in Oman
The author reviews the main questions in regard to conservation of Al Jabal Al Akhdar, the uniquely rich ecosystem of northern Oman, arguing that the precautionary principle should be applied in decision‐making for the ecosystem
