Toxic metal contamination in soil and marine sediment associated with refuse dumps at palmer station, Antarctica
The extent of organic and metals contamination in soils from two dump sites at Palmer Station, Antarctica, was compared with reference and runoff sites to determine whether the dumps contained hazardous materials. Analyses of samples collected from the dump sites showed numerous metals at high levels and few organic compounds at generally low levels. To better assess the extent of contamination, an archived set of soil and sediment samples collec…
The role of microcosms in ecological research
"The role of microcosms in ecological research† ." , 10(1), pp. 1–2 Notes A symposium held during the 26th Annual AIBS Meeting of Biological Societies, Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon, August 17–22, 1975. Operated by Union Carbide Corporation under contract with the Energy Research and Development Administration. Environmental Sciences Division Publication No. 948
The microcosm as a tool for estimation of environmental transport of toxic materials
Increases in toxic chemical dissipation makes their control in the environment desirable. Environmental control of these substances requires thorough understanding of the functioning of ecosystems potentially receiving chemical input, and of the behavior and fate of released chemicals. Terrestrial microcosms are useful tools in chemical fate studies; however, critical assessment of their ability to simulate ecosystem processes has been limited. T…
