Soil compaction. An ecological risk in urban forests
Unregulated trampling in natural and urban forests compacts the soil, and the plants suffer. In an urban forest in Moscow, soil bulk density in heavily trampled sites increases significantly: 1.6–1.8 g/cm3 compared with 0.6–0.7 g/cm3 on sites under negligible human pressure. As soil density increases, heavy metals and their mobile fractions accumulate in the soil and roots. Amongst forest species capable of loosening soil and thereby improving it…
Geoecological study of the soil microbial communities of the natural and agricultural ecosystems in the south-eastern Baltic sea region
The number of different groups of soil microorganisms in the natural and agricultural ecosystems of the Kaliningrad Peninsula and the Curonian Spit was studied. It has been established that the studied ecosystems are distinguished by different types of soil, physicochemical parameters and the ratio of the main representatives of the soil microbial community: ammonifying microorganisms; microorganisms using mineral forms of nitrogen; nitrogen-fixi…
Ecological and geochemical evaluation of ecosystems of the Curonian Spit (Russia)
This paper presents the results of the quantitative content of metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Mn, Sr, Ni, Ca, Fe, Br, Rb) in the leaves of the flora dominants of the main ecosystems of the Curonian Spit (foredune, palve area, large dune ridge). The heavy metal content in the upper layer of sandy soils, forest ecosystems (palve area) and large dune ridge was analysed. In the accumulative horizon of soils, the heavy metal content did not exceed the sanitary s…
The contribution of polyphenols to plant resistance to Pb soil pollution
This article considers the concentration of lead, polyphenols and water-soluble antioxidants (AOA) in the leaves of 4 species of woody, 11 species of shrub and 7 species of herbaceous plants growing in different functional zones in the city of Kaliningrad. The accumulations of Pb – the principal pollutant in urban ecosystems – were studied in the urban topsoil and plant leaves. An increase in Pb concentration in soils was associated with a decrea…
