  • Measuring vaccine effects on antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance in low and middle-income countries

Open Access•Chinwe Iwu-Jaja, Chidozie Declan Iwu et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

Vaccines represent a critical strategy for combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR), yet methodological approaches for assessing their impact remain heterogeneous, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where both infectious disease and resistance burdens are highest. This scoping review systematically mapped the methodological approaches, data sources, and outcome measures used to evaluate vaccine impacts on AMR in LMICs. We se…

  • Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance 1990–2021

Open Access•Mohsen Naghavi, Stein Emil Vollset et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2024

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses an important global health challenge in the 21st century. A previous study has quantified the global and regional burden of AMR for 2019, followed with additional publications that provided more detailed estimates for several WHO regions by country. To date, there have been no studies that produce comprehensive estimates of AMR burden across locations that encompass historical trends and future for…

  • Prevalence of E. coli O157

Open Access•Chidozie Declan Iwu, Erika du Plessis et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

We assessed the prevalence of E. coli O157:H7 in irrigation water and agricultural soil samples in two District Municipalities in South Africa using standard culture-based and molecular techniques. Presumptive E. coli O157:H7 counts in irrigation water and agricultural soil samples ranged from 1.00 Log10 CFU/100 ml to 4.11 Log10 CFU/100 ml and 2.20 Log10 CFU/g to 4.21 Log10 CFU/g respectively (P ≤ 0.05). Thirteen (28%) of the confirmed isolates (…

  • Antibiogram imprints of E. coli O157

Open Access•Chidozie Declan Iwu, Erika du Plessis et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The antibiogram signatures of E. coli O157:H7 (n=46) recovered from irrigation water and agricultural soil samples were assessed using the standard disc diffusion method against a panel of 16 antibiotics and molecular methods. The prevalent antibiotic resistance patterns follow the order: cefuroxime (95.7%), nitrofurantoin (93.5%), ampicillin (73.9%), chloramphenicol (71.7%), cefotaxime (60.9%) and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (58.7%). The antib…
