Simply Institutional Ethnography: Creating a Sociology for People
The associations between bullying victimization and internalizing distress, suicidality, and substance use in Jamaican adolescents: The moderating role of parental involvement
The present study investigated whether bullying victimization and parental involvement were associated with internalizing distress, suicidal thoughts and behavior, and substance use in Jamaican adolescents as well as whether parental involvement moderated the relation between bullying victimization and measures of psychological and behavioral distress. Analyses were based on a sample of 1,595 adolescents who were participating in the 2010 Global …

Homophobic and transphobic violence against youth: The Jamaican context
Jamaican LGBTI youth face tragic disparities, the level of which warrants immediate legislative attention. Jamaica has been characterized as one of the most homophobic and transphobic societies globally. Therefore, LGBTI youth routinely experience widespread discrimination and hostility at from the very social institutions (i.e. family, school, community and government) from which they would expect nurturance, care and protection. Also troubling …
School bullying in the Jamaican context through an ecological lens
Childhood bullying is a grave breach of children’s human rights and a serious public health issue. The phenomenon has warranted research attention in developed societies and shown to have serious short- and long-term implications for individuals, families, and society as a whole. This article provides an overview of the school bullying phenomenon in Jamaica. Using the scant data from that context, we conclude that there is a high prevalence of bu…

Family Violence and Aggression and Their Associations With Psychosocial Functioning in Jamaican Adolescents
The purpose of the current study was to examine the relationships among selected family interaction variables and psychosocial outcomes in a sample of Jamaican adolescents. The authors hypothesized that adolescent psychosocial outcomes would be negatively associated with physical violence, verbal aggression would be more potent than physical violence, and the combined effect of all aggression and violence would be more detrimental than either for…
Parenting style and psychosocial outcomes in a sample of Jamaican adolescents
We examined the relationship between parenting style and adolescents' psychological and behavioural well-being in the Jamaican context. Consistent with pertinent studies from western societies, our data indicated that authoritarian parenting was associated with diminished psychological and behavioural adjustment, such that adolescents who reported their parents as more authoritarian also reported a greater risk of anger depression, suicide ideati…
Ideology, Science, and Social Relations: A Reinterpretation of Marx’s Epistemology
M y work and thinking as a feminist sociologist have been profoundly influenced by the understanding I developed of the materialist method, as it was first formulated in Marx and Engels’s The German Ideology . The interpretation of Marx’s method explored in this chapter originated in my interest in finding a method of inquiry other than those in which I had been trained, which replicated the objectifying androcentrism of the ruling relations. 1 I…
Physical Discipline and Socioemotional Adjustment Among Jamaican Adolescents
Relationships Among Selected Demographic Variables and Adolescent Psychosocial Well‐Being
This study investigated the relationships among self‐esteem, social competence, stress, social support (family and peer), gender, and ethnicity among urban, rural, and suburban adolescents. The participants in this study were drawn from a nationally representative sample of adolescent youth. Analyses of data revealed that there were significant relationships between self‐esteem, social competence, stress, and social support. Significant differenc…
Categories Are Not Enough
West and Zimmerman’s (1975) early investigations of gender ininteraction were particularly valuable in contributing to the visibility of how we (women) might be inadvertently participating in our own silencing in interactions with men. I have also appreciated West and Fenstermaker’s insistence on understanding difference as in and of peo-ple’s doings. However, I disagree with how the political categories of race, class, and gender are translated …
Making Change From Below
In this paper I've tried to spell out what I think we're confronting in attempting to make change in the context of global capitalism. I've used the notion of making change from below because the kind of government organization that made taking it over appear practicable has largely disappeared in a fragmentation of the state at many levels both within Canada and at international levels. Moreover the terrain of struggle has shifted from the direc…
Predictors of Children's Understandings of Death: Age, Cognitive Ability, Death Experience and Maternal Communicative Competence
A child's age, cognitive ability, and exposure to death in the environment have been documented as major factors affecting the formation of a mature death concept. The present study investigated the relationships between these three factors (age, cognitive ability, and death experience) and children's understandings of death, as well as the relationship between mothers' communicative competence and children's understandings of death. Thirty-seven…
From the 14th Floor to the Sidewalk: Writing Sociology at Ground Level
I had difficulty responding to Kai Erikson's essay. I couldn't do so very directly. I found I had to open up and examine a fundamental divergence between the sociology he represents and the sociology I practice. The difference, of course, is one of how sociology is written though in a somewhat different sense of writing than that with which Erikson is concerned. His issues are primarily those of style; mine are of what sociology's lexical practic…

Violence among youth in Jamaica: A growing public health risk and challenge

Institutional Ethnography as Practice
In this edited collection, institutional ethnographers draw on their field research experiences to address different aspects of institutional ethnographic practice. As institutional ethnography embraces the actualities of people's experiences and lives, the contributors utilize their research to reveal how institutional relations and regimes are organized. As a whole, the book aims to provide readers with an accurate overview of what it is like t…
Institutional Ethnography: A Sociology for People
Prominent sociologist Dorothy Smith outlines a method of inquiry that uses everyday experience as a lens to examine social relations and social institutions. Concerned with articulating an inclusive sociology that goes beyond looking at a particular group of people from the detached viewpoint of the researcher, this is a method of inquiry for people, incorporating the expert's research and language into everyday experience to examine social relat…

Ideology, Science and Social Relations: A Reinterpretation of Marx’s Epistemology
The article argues that Marx's use of the concept of ideology in The German Ideology is incidental to a sustained critique of how those he described as the German ideologists think and reason about society and history and that this critique is not simply of an idealist theory that represents society and history as determined by consciousness but of methods of reasoning that treat concepts, even of those of political economy, as determinants. His …
Making Sense of What People Do: A Sociological Perspective
This final keynote address focuses on how to make work visible. Drawing on the methodology of institutional ethnography, the author advocates a mode of inquiry that starts in people's everyday lives, examining the relations, organizations and forms of power that intersect with and organize the everyday world and relate us to others in ways we do not easily see or appreciate. This approach makes visible a whole range of activities that do not usua…

The Standard North American Family: SNAF as an Ideological Code
This article describes the 'Standard North American Family' or SNAF as an ideological code. An ideological code is analogous to a genetic code, reproducing its characteristic forms and order in multiple and various discursive settings. Its operation in two settings is explored. The first is the writer's experience (shared with Alison Griffith) of designing and carrying out a study of the work that women do as mothers in relation to their children…
K is Mentally Ill' the Anatomy of a Factual Account
The paper analyses an interview describing how K came to be defined by her friends as mentally ill. The method of analysis assumes that the structure of the conceptual scheme 'mental illness' which the reader uses in recognizing 'mental illness' is isomorphic with that organizing the text and hence is discoverable 'in' it. The full text of the interview is presented as the data. The analysis explicates the interpretation of the text as a method o…
Sociology from Women's Experience: A Reaffirmation
The discussion of my work by Pat Hill Collins, Bob Connell, and Charles Lemert is generous and very much appreciated. My difficulty in responding is that each develops a critique from a very different theoretical stance.' Lemert brings to bear his interest in what he describes as the sociological dilemma of the subject-object relation, and the postmodernist critique of modernity and its unitary subject. Pat Hill Collins draws on the tradition of …

used to devise ways of seeing social organization in the speech and graffiti in which the ideology of fag is realized in schools. His conception of the dialogic explicates the relationship between researcher and informants, as well as the dialogues internal to informants' narratives. Excerpts from their stories create windows into the local practices of the ideology of fag as they experienced it and made available the social organization of their…
Telling the Truth after Postmodernism1
The concerns of this paper come from an attempt to develop sociological inquiry from women's standpoint and to create a sociology for people. It is a project that must rely on the possibility of 'telling the truth.' The poststructuralist/postmodernist critique of representation and reference creates a fundamental problem for this project. It challenges the very possibility of a sociology committed to inquiry into the actualities of the social as …
High Noon in Textland: A Critique of Clough
The differences between Patricia Clough and I are very deep. Not that I reject the kind of analysis of discourse that Clough recommends. On the contrary. I've valued what I've learned from feminist and literary cultural theory and analysis. I have disagreements, of course. These have been sharpened by my encounter with Clough's critique of my work. A central and quite fundamental difference is that I propose a point d'appui for sociological inqui…

and political economy originate in my experience as activist and academic in the women's movement. They arise from my efforts to translate into a political and scholarly practice the discoveries of the power relations organizing the personal and domestic as feminists have experienced and analysed them. Writing Women's Experience into Social Science
From the Margins: Women’s Standpoint as a Method of Inquiry in the Social Sciences
The social sciences are systematically developed forms of knowledge that are in and of the ruling relations and conform to its objectifying order. This paper proposes the creation of a sociology that puts into question, at the outset, the objectifications that universalize and generalize discourse and ruling across local settings and localized consciousness of actual people at the margins and translates the subtexts of gender, race and class into…

Rigoberta Menchú and David Stoll: Contending stories

Relationship of Scores on Two Personality Measures: Creativity and Self-Image
This study investigated the relationship between self-image and creativity in late adolescence. The multidimensional Offer Self-image Questionnaire was used to assess self-image while the How Do You Think Inventory was used to measure creativity. The results were similar to investigations indicating superior socioemotional functioning among gifted adolescents. More creatively scoring subjects (n = 65) exhibited better psychosocial functioning on …
