Open Access•Hélène Sechehaye, Laïla Amezian•ARTICLE•Intersections Canadian Journal of…•2022

The Moroccan community is one of the largest national communities in Belgium. Several all-female bands are active at Moroccan weddings in Brussels, specialising in many genres, including ša‘bī (“popular”). This article focuses on the trajectories of these musicians, highlighting the obstacles they have faced as women in the Moroccan–Brussels community, and as migrant women in Brussels society. This article also examines different aspects of what …

    Open Access•Hélène Sechehaye, Stéphanie Weisser•ARTICLE•Civilisations•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 13

This article examines the Gnawa musical practices in Brussels through an ethnomusicological approach. The Gnawa belong to a community originating in Morocco, and have integrated new elements into their practices, which could be explained by their relocation abroad. Furthermore, the comparison with the situation in other cities allows us to assume that the situation in Brussels has a unique character. There have been changes in the methods of lear…

  • Gnawa-muzikanten in Brussel
