  • Amphibious Phenomenologies of Albinism in Africa: Local Epistemologies, Biomedical Classifications and Humanitarian Politics

    Open Access•Giorgio Brocco•ARTICLE•Journal of African Cultural Studies•2026

Over the past two decades, albinism in Africa has received wide media, political and scholarly attention, particularly in relation to violence and discrimination. This article offers a critical, interdisciplinary analysis of historical and contemporary scholarship on albinism in the continent, examining how colonial racial taxonomies, local moral-religious ontologies, biomedical classifications, humanitarian advocacy and cultural representations …

  • Modalities of Enfleshment: Albinism and the Limits of Biosociality in Tanzania

    Open Access•Giorgio Brocco•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology•2026

Media and humanitarian discourses surrounding violence against people with albinism in Tanzania have fostered forms of biosocial relatedness and public recognition. Yet albinism does not consistently consolidate into a stable biosocial identity. Drawing on ethnographic research with Farida, Baraka and other interlocutors with albinism, this article ethnographically develops the concept of "modalities of enfleshment" to attend to how albinism is l…

  • Being in Work: Work as Experience, Circumstantial Disablement, and the Desire to Work as Normal

    Stefanie Mauksch, Giorgio Brocco•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•2026•References: 18

In this paper, we carve out “being in work” as people’s desire and effort to habituate themselves in experiences of work. We do so from the unusual angle of two disabled persons, Bibek and Neema, who struggle for work in Nepal and Tanzania. Drawing on disability anthropology and the anthropology of work, we show how our interlocutors circumstantially emphasize different ways to be in work and engage in activities that broaden the horizons of what…

  • Intersectionalizing albinism in Tanzania: Disability, Gender, and Socio-Economic Capital in Lived Experiences

    Open Access•Giorgio Brocco•ARTICLE•African Identities•2025•References: 48

Drawing on intersectional analytics, this article examines how socio-economic capital, gender and discourses of disability shape experiences and practices of albinism in Tanzania. The analysis juxtaposes the widely circulated public narrative of Haji Manara, a prominent Tanzanian public figure with albinism, with ethnographic data from two research participants: Amani, a teacher at a special needs school, and Maria, an elderly farmer and activist…

  • Provincializing bodyminds, decolonizing disability

    Open Access•Giorgio Brocco, L A Meek et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 42

In critical disability studies and crip theory, a key intervention has been to challenge Cartesian dualism by using terms such as bodyminds, body-minds, mind/bodies, and other hybrids. While the concept of "bodyminds" integrates physical and cognitive experiences and challenges dualistic thinking, it has been criticized by scholars for prioritizing Eurocentric notions of the mind and subjectivity over other understandings of bodily normality and …

  • "Introduction to "Laboring from ex-centric Sites: Disability, Chronicity, and Work

    Open Access•Giorgio Brocco, Stefanie Mauksch•ARTICLE•Anthropology of Work Review•2025•References: 63

The transition to industrial regimes has produced new categories of people deemed "unfit" for labor. Even if these boundaries are more porous nowadays, contributions to this Special Issue reveal continuities in how people struggle for a place in domains of work that are ill-shaped to accommodate their diverse bodyminds. Drawing on disability/chronicity cases from India, Germany, Mexico, Turkey, Brazil/Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United …

  • Multiple Energy Landscapes Ethnographies of Power: A Political Anthropology of Energy

    Open Access•Giorgio Brocco•ARTICLE•PoLAR Political and Legal…•2022•References: 9

Over the last decades, global media debates and political discussions around climate change, environmental pollution and fossil fuel extraction have arisen vehemently. Anthropological attention to energy has therefore grown more explicit, thanks to studies conducted by a crop of scholars reflecting on various political, economic, and social issues related to the use and commercialization of hydrocarbon energy resources. In the wake of the recent …

  • Notes of despair and consciousness: Performativity and visibility of albinism in musical practices

    Giorgio Brocco•ARTICLE•Disability & Society•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 15

Recent studies endeavour to shed light on the multiple ways bodily impairments and disability identities are defined, socially constructed and enacted in various musical practices. The majority of these analyses are from the Global North and do not examine the various entanglements of music and disability in other socio-economic, political and geographical contexts. This article therefore explores the intertwinement of notions of disability ident…

  • Albinism, stigma, subjectivity and global-local discourses in Tanzania

    Giorgio Brocco•ARTICLE•Anthropology and Medicine•2016•Cited by: 7•References: 31

Societal ideas and explanations of albinism at the local level in Tanzania are conceived in terms of family history, social relations, economic status, moral-religious positions, global-local flows of information and humanitarian actions on behalf of people with the congenital condition. This paper aims to show how the subjectivities of people with albinism in Tanzania are shaped and re-shaped through local moral conceptions as well as globalizin…

  • Labeling albinism: Language and discourse surrounding people with albinism in Tanzania

    Giorgio Brocco•ARTICLE•Disability & Society•2015•Cited by: 13•References: 15

This article is based on a qualitative study that set out to analyze the labels and terms attached to 28 people affected by albinism in villages in Kilolo district, Tanzania. Even though national and international attention to killings of people with albinism has attempted to improve general knowledge of albinism and reduce discrimination, most of the community members within the study had little knowledge of the (bio)medical explanations for alb…
