  • Perceived spatial frequency shift after adaptation to compound gratings of two sinusoidals in phase or 180° out of phase

    SHIGERU ICHIHARA•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1987

Prolonged viewing of high contrast grating is known to cause an apparent shift in subsequent spatial frequency perception. This experiment tested the effect of compound adapting gratings composed of the fundamental and the third harmonic which were in phase or 180° out of phase. Six well trained subjects served the experiment. Perceptual frequency shift was found to occur as predicted but no phase effect was found. This was confirmed by multiple …

  • Spatial frequency and orientation specificities in metacontrast

MASAKAZU ISHIZUKA, SHIGERU ICHIHARA•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1984

Spatial frequency and orientation specific effects were found in metacontrast. A circular target stimulus (TS) patch and an annular masking stimulus (MS) patch were used, both with square wave gratings, the frequency of which were either 6.6 or 13.2 cpd. Orientation of TS was always vertical and that of MS was either vertical or horizontal. There was a spatial gap (d), 0′, 6′ or 12′ in visual angle between TS and MS. The masking effect was measur…

  • Temporal integration and visual masking of dot patterns successively presented

TADASHI KIKUCHI, Tadasu Oyama et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1983

Two visual stimuli consisting of one to five dots were presented successively for 5 ms each with a varying SOA. The reports of four subjects were classified into three types: Type 1, simultaneous perception of the two stimuli; Type 2, partially integrated perception; and Type 3, independent perception. The dominant type changed with the increase of the SOA. Type 1 prevailed up to the SOA of 60 ms and then was superseded by Type 2, which then was …

  • The Effects of Relative Orientation of Surrounding Gratings on Binocular Rivalry and Apparent Brightness of Central Gratings

SHIGERU ICHIHARA, KEN GORYO•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1978

To find the effects of relative orientation of surrounding gratings on visibility (dominance) of central gratings in binocular rivalry and on apparent brightness of central gratings, we examined how the visibility (Exp. I, II) and the apparent brightness (Exp. III) would be changed as the function of the angle (θ), or orientation difference, between the central and the surrounding gratings. The results indicated that similar effects were found in…

  • Which Determines Figural After-Effect, Retinal Size or Apparent Size

Tadasu Oyama, SHIGERU ICHIHARA•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1973

After-effects of I-circles of various sizes on a T-circle of a constant size (1 degree) were measured by means of the method of transposition (Oyama, 1959) for 5 Ss under four distance conditions of I- and T-circles, Near-Near, Far-Near, Far-Far, and Near-Far. A white card with a fixation mark was presented 1 sec at the same distance as the T-figure between the I-and T-periods to make S's eyes to ready to fixate the T-figure. Constancy measuremen…
