Functional visual field in a rapid serial visual presentation task
Dynamic temporal change in the size of functional visual field was measured using a dual task: a peripheral task in which one square in a background pattern of squares was changed in shape to a dot; and a central task involving the rapid serial visual presentation of a sequence of letters (RSVP task). The temporal lag between the occurrences of the dot and the RSVP target was manipulated. University students were asked to detect the dot and to de…
Temporal integration and visual masking of dot patterns successively presented
Two visual stimuli consisting of one to five dots were presented successively for 5 ms each with a varying SOA. The reports of four subjects were classified into three types: Type 1, simultaneous perception of the two stimuli; Type 2, partially integrated perception; and Type 3, independent perception. The dominant type changed with the increase of the SOA. Type 1 prevailed up to the SOA of 60 ms and then was superseded by Type 2, which then was …
Effects of dot density and duration of mask stimulus upon visual backward masking
The mask effectiveness was measured in terms of critical ISI, varying dot density and duration of the mask. The resulting curves were inversed U-shaped functions of random dot density, indicating that the maximal effectiveness of the mask was obtained at about 50% dot density. As the mask duration increased, the U-shaped curves became more symmetrical. This effect was primarily due to an increase in the masking magnitude at lower dot density leve…
Lighting Effects on Interior Visual Environment
Effects of illumination upon the comfortableness of visual environment of a miniature-living room were examined under various lighting conditions, using the semantic differential method. Three components were extracted by principal components analysis. The first component, activity, was entirely affected by illuminance. The second, elegance, was related to illuminance and color temperature. Color temperature was practically responsible for the th…
A Comparison of Similarity Space and Semantic Space of Random Shapes
Two experiments were run for 25 randomly generated shapes varying in the number of turns. Similarity judgments, made by 36 undergraduate students, were scaled using non-metric multidimensional scaling technique. As the results, 3 dimensions were obtained, representing dimensions of compactness, complexity, and symmetry. As a second experiment, judgments were made on 30 semantic differential scales by 40 undergraduate students. As the results of a…
