Effects of stroking horses on both humans' and horses' heart rate responses 1
The present study examined both human and horse heart rates (HRs) when humans stroked horses for 90 seconds; the subjective arousal levels of the humans were measured by the Tohoku Activation Deactivation Adjective Check List before and after stroking horses. Six male subjects with a positive attitude toward companion animals and 6 male subjects with a negative attitude were selected by their scores on the Pet Attitude Scale, and these two groups…
A study on the relationship between experimental conflict and degree of conflict in individuals
This study aimed at examining the relationship between experimentally induced conflict and subjects' strength of conflict. The experimental conflict was induced by the double vocal stimuli consisting of a pair of statements, each expressing a different emotion selected out of the four emotions: joy, sadness, anger and fear. Based on the conflict index of the EPI (Plutchik & Kellerman, 1974), the subjects were divided into a high conflict group an…
Effects of counterirritation on experimentally produced itching
This experiment was performed to test the effects of contralateral counterirritation on itching produced by application to the skin of Japanese yam. Each of 22 subjects were exposed to all four of the following conditions: itch-stimulus plus counterirritation, itch-stimulus without counterirritation, placebo plus counterirritation, and placebo without counterirritation. Japanese yam was applied to palmar side of the subject's left forearm. The co…
Cross-modality validation of affective arousal by texture
Two experiments were conducted to compare the affective reactions aroused by tactile and visual stimuli. Eight textured tactile surfaces and 20 visual surfaces were rated on 22 7-point semantic scales by 100 undergraduate students in Experiments I and II, respectively. Factor analyses of ratings were carried out separately in the two experiments. In both experiments, three corresponding factors were identified as “like-dislike”, “tension-relaxati…
Personality Profiles of Japanese College Students
A Japanese language translation, of a theoretically based personality test called the Emotions Profile Index (EPI), was administered to 500 male and 500 female university students in Japan. The major differences between Japanese and American students, appeared on 3 of the 9 scales of the EPI. It appeared that the Japanese students were less impulsive, and more depressed and timid than their American counterparts. When Japanese male and female stu…
A Personality Scale for Susceptibility to Conflict
An MMPI scale has been developed for the purpose of evaluating the ability of individuals to resolve conflicts. As the preliminary step to deriving this scale an experiment was performed which involved the administration of a discrimination conflict to 494 subjects individually. Seventy-four of these subjects were selected as a high conflict group on the basis of low conflict resolution and eighty-six as a low conflict group according to their rap…
