Age influences visual attention characteristics among accident‐free and accident‐involved drivers
The present study investigated age‐related characteristics of visual attention by employing a useful field of view (UFOV) format with a procedure consisting of a central target letter identification task and a peripheral target regularity discrimination task. This study aimed to examine the effects of aging on UFOV performance as well as the relationship between accident history and UFOV performance. Using divided and focused attention designs, t…
Tapping task as an index of mental workload in a time sharing task 1
The sensitivity of tapping task to mental workload was investigated. Thirteen subjects were asked to produce 3 s intervals continuously while performing a time sharing task. The time sharing task was designed to manipulate a demand to allocate an attentional resource to one target and a demand to switch the target to which an attentional resource was mainly allocated. Results showed that produced intervals became shorter and more variable as the …
Shift of attention in depth in a semi‐realistic setting
This research was based on previous research on the useful field of view in real driving, however shift of attention was examined in depth by the use of an improved tunnel simulator. Despite of the importance of this area of research, nothing like this has been performed previously. The subjects’ task was judgment of the relative distance of targets (farther, nearer, or the same), in comparison with a fixation point. Reaction times were measured.…
