Spatiotemporal integration and contour interpolation revealed by a dot localization task with serial presentation paradigm
The visual system seems to integrate information that is presented over time in a spatially fragmented fashion, with the result that observers are able to report the whole shape of objects. This research considers relations in space and time that allow the integrated percepts of complete objects. Specifically, temporal characteristics for spatiotemporal integration of illusory contour and spatial characteristics of interpolated contour are examin…
Perception of illusory contour and spatio-temporal integration in the visual system
Spatial and temporal conditions to perceive an illusory contour figure were examined. Six figural elements inducing an illusory figure were successively presented. Total time to present all inducers and the ratio of duration to ISI between inducers were systematically varied. Five subjects were required to rate the clarity of illusory contour, brightness difference and apparent depth difference on an 11 point scale. The effects of total time and …
Spatio-temporal integration in visual perception
Two experiments were conducted to examine the effect of fixation choices on the perception of total figure. To restrict the spatial and temporal span of eye fixation, a video editing system and a personal computer were used. In experiment 1, an ambiguous figure divided into six segments was used as material and sixty-two undergraduate students were served as subjects. Segments were presented successively one by one. The effect of segment sequence…
