Haptics can modulate the Hering and Wundt illusions 1 , 2
It is generally believed that, when information from different sensory modalities is in conflict, vision typically dominates touch. In contrast, it has been shown that haptics can play an important role in the development of visual spatial perception in congenitally blind or early blinded people with restored sight. In the present study, the relationship between touch and vision was investigated by examining the effects of haptics on the appearan…
Perceptual transparency and lightness assimilation with changing illumination
A configuration looking like a cross of a black rectangle and a white rectangle on a mid-gray background was uniformly illuminated. Illuminance of the total display and the reflectance of the central area were systematically changed. The subjects were asked to judge which one, the black or the white, looked transparent or in front, and to judge the lightness of the central area. It was found that there was a very high correlation between transpar…
Illuminance as a Determinant of Apparent Transparency
A configuration looking like a cross of a black rectangle and a white rectangle on a mid-gray background was uniformly illuminated. Illuminance was varied over 2.4 log units in five steps. Each of 10 Ss was asked to judge which one, the black or the white, looked transparent or in front. The percent of “white” judgments generally increased as illuminance was increased. The effect was most marked when the central overlapping area had an intermedia…
Brightness Changes in a Complex Field With Changing Illumination
A configuration of 5 Munsell neutral gray squares on a gray and white background and a modulus were haploscopically presented to 12 Ss. Each S made brightness estimates for the squares, their background, and the illumination of total field when illuminance was varied in 3 steps over 1.2 log units. Linear brightness functions were obtained on a log-log plot, where brightness estimates were plotted against illuminance. Mean slopes systematically de…
Effects of the Size and Texture of Background Upon Size Constancy
The problem was studied in terms of the system of reference:(1) the perceived size of an object decreased as the physical size of background increased;(2) the perceived distance also varied inversely with the physical size of background;(3) if the standard and comparison backgrounds at different distances subtended an equal visual angle the degree of size constancy was rather low whereas it was relatively high when the both backgrounds were equal…
