  • Peopling of Japan as Revealed by Genotyping of Urinary JC Virus DNA

    Open Access•Tadaichi Kitamura, Chie Sugimoto et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•1998•Cited by: 7•References: 5

It has been shown that the typing of urinary JC polyomavirus (JCV) DNA offers a novel means of tracing human migrations. We used this approach to elucidate the colonization of the Japanese Archipelago. Approximately 1, 000 JCV DNA-positive urine samples were collected throughout the Japanese Archipelago, and used to amplify a 610-base-pair JCV DNA region (IG region). We determined about 100 IG sequences, from which a phylogenetic tree was constru…

  • Verbal memory span, visual memory span, and their correlations with cognitive tasks

    Shinichi Ichikawa, SHIN-ICHI ICHIKAWA•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1983

Immediate memory spans of 82 students were measured through the recall of digit sequences and dot-in-matrix patterns. The reliabilities of both spans were very high, while the correlation between the spans was low (r=.209). In addition, the same subjects were given eight kinds of cognitive tasks (Word Relation, Maze, Addition, Shape Series, Anagram, Space Relation, Number Series, and Mental Rotation) selected from intelligence tests. The two span…

  • Rated ease of memorization of dot-in-matrix patterns

    Shinichi Ichikawa, SHIN-ICHI ICHIKAWA•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1981

In Experiment I, 60 8-dot-in-4×4-matrix patterns and 60 7-dot-in-3×5-matrix patterns were rated for ease of memorization on a 9-point scale. As a result of multiple regression analysis, two effective variables for estimating rated ease of memorization were selected from physical variables which described the configuration of dots in a matrix: One was “equivalence set size”(Garner & Clement, 1963) representing the degree of symmetry, and the other…
