Aļesja Lavrinoviča undertakes a detailed critical examination of 1 Corinthians 14:34-35, a passage that has played a decisive role in debates on women's participation in early Christian worship. Drawing on textual criticism, redaction criticism, and linguistic analysis, she explores the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic dimensions of the verses in close dialogue with manuscript traditions, with particular attention to early Greek and Latin witne…
The Syntactic Flexibility of 1 Corinthians 14

Internal evidence reveals that verse 33b does not have a smooth syntactic connection to either the preceding (“God is a God of peace”) or the following clause (“women should be silent”). The purpose of this study is to illuminate the syntactical function of verse 33b and its place in 1 Cor 14. Verse 33b h…
Cor 14.34–5 without ‘in All the Churches of the Saints’
The present study of the oldest and most relevant extant manuscripts that contain 1 Cor 14.33b–35 shows that v. 33b (ὡς ἐν πάσαις ταῖς ἐκκλησίαις τῶν ἁγίων) is not connected with vv. 34–5. Scribes would consider 33b to be a part of 33a. Manuscripts א, A, B, Fuldensis, D, F, G, ms. 88* clearly read 1 Cor 14.34–5 as a separate paragraph. In these manuscripts, where vv. 34–5 are found after v. 40, v. 33b closely follows 33a. P 46 and P 123 are damag…
