  • Thyroid (Plasma Butanol-Extractable Iodine) Responses to 72-Hr. Avoidance Sessions in the Monkey

John Mason, John W Mason et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1968

Plasma thyroid hormone levels, as judged by the BEI measurement, show slow but prolonged elevations in association with conditioned avoidance sessions in the monkey. The peak of the mean BEI response occurs at the end of the 3-day avoidance session and represents about a 50% elevation above baseline values. Levels remained elevated well into the recovery period and the response was prolonged as much as 2 or 3 weeks in some experiments. Smaller, b…

  • Urinary Aldosterone and Urine Volume Responses to 72-Hr. Avoidance Sessions in the Monkey

John Mason, John W Mason et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1968

Urinary aldosterone levels showed marked fluctuations in relation to 72-hr. conditioned avoidance sessions in the monkey. Two different response patterns were observed. The first was a biphasic response characterized by an initial depression during avoidance, followed by a rebound elevation during the recovery period. The second was characterized by an elevation, in some cases quite marked, during avoidance with a return to basal level during the…

  • Urinary Estrone, Estradiol, and Estriol Responses to 72-Hr. Avoidance Sessions in the Monkey

John Mason, John W Mason et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1968

Urinary estrone, estradiol and estriol all show a similar biphasic response to 72-hr. conditioned avoidance sessions in the monkey, characterized by a decline in levels during avoidance, usually followed by a rebound elevation in the recovery period. The duration of the two response phases, the primary depression and the secondary elevation, may vary from one experiment to the next, particularly in relation to repetition of the stressful experien…

  • Urinary Androsterone, Etiocholanolone, and Dehydroepiandrosterone Responses to 72-Hr. Avoidance Sessions in the Monkey

John Mason, John W Mason et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1968

Urinary androsterone, etiocholanolone, and dehydroepiandrosterone levels show substantial responses in association with 72-hr. avoidance sessions in the monkey. In most instances a biphasic response is observed which is characterized by a decline in levels during avoidance followed by a rebound elevation during the recovery period. The duration of the two response phases, the primary depression and the secondary elevation, may vary from one exper…

  • Urinary Epinephrine and Norepinephrine Responses to 72-Hr. Avoidance Sessions in the Monkey

John Mason, John W Mason et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1968

Marked elevations in urinary epinephrine levels occur in response to 72-hr. conditioned avoidance sessions in the monkey. The response is relatively rapid and brief, reaching a peak on the first avoidance day, declining on the second and third avoidance days, and returning to baseline levels immediately on the first recovery day. In some instances epinephrine levels fell substantially below baseline values during the recovery period. Smaller but …

  • Plasma and Urinary 17-Hydroxycorticosteroid Responses to 72-Hr. Avoidance Sessions in the Monkey

John Mason, John W Mason et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1968

Marked elevations in both mean urinary and mean 9 A.M. plasma 17-OHCS levels are associated with 72-hr. avoidance sessions in the monkey. The urinary 17-OHCS elevations persist also for several days in the recovery period. The 17-OHCS elevations, while substantial, do not appear to represent maximal adrenal cortical responses and no evidence of adrenal cortical exhaustion was observed. Indirect evidence suggests rather the hypothesis that neural …
