Visceral Learning in Asthma
The hypothesis of visceral learning has opened a new avenue in the search for a pathway between psychosocial stimuli and physiological changes. To apply this approach to asthma required a technique for the measurement of the airways' patency, which could be interfaced with the strategy of visceral learning. The method of forced oscillations was shown to correlate highly with whole body plethysmography. The rapid output of the instrument was used …
Alpha-Adrenergic Receptors in the Human Lung
The whole-body plethysmograph was used to study airway conductance (Gaw/Vgt) in humans after adrenergic agents, nebulized in a propylene glycol and water vehicle, were inhaled. Ten young males free of pulmonary or other disease were given the vehicle alone as well as the α stimulant, methoxamine. Gaw/Vgt increased slightly after the vehicle was administered. However, in all 10 subjects, a decrease was noted after they had received methoxamine alo…
Airway Resistance and Emotional State in Bronchial Asthma
Whole-body plethysmograph measurements and challenge inhalation of carbachol were combined to assess asthmatic changes longitudinally. Airway conductance proved to be relatively stable over a 10-week period in 3 normal subjects. Five asthmatics showed periodically lower conductance and greater variability. Periods of low conductance at times could be observed to precede other manifestations of oncoming major attacks. Change in conductance upon ch…
