Coping and Psychosocial Adaptation
OBJECTIVES: This study examined the relationship between coping and psychosocial adaptation in cancer patients over time and across distinct clinical events. METHODS: In a prospective longitudinal study 74 patients with breast cancer were observed for 3 to 5 years at 3- to 6-month intervals. A total of 684 interviews were conducted at different observation points. Three rating scales were used to assess coping and adjustment: first, the Bernese C…
Dyspnea
In 63 subjects (one-third each: asthmatics, patients with psychogenic respiratory disturbances and normal controls) dyspnea was elicited by a bronchoconstrictive stimulus. Before and after stimulation, the airway resistance (by whole-body plethysmograph), the first-second value and vital capacity (by spirometer) and the breath-holding time were determined. In addition, self-ratings of breathlessness were compared with the results of respiratory f…
Airway Resistance and Emotional State in Bronchial Asthma
Whole-body plethysmograph measurements and challenge inhalation of carbachol were combined to assess asthmatic changes longitudinally. Airway conductance proved to be relatively stable over a 10-week period in 3 normal subjects. Five asthmatics showed periodically lower conductance and greater variability. Periods of low conductance at times could be observed to precede other manifestations of oncoming major attacks. Change in conductance upon ch…
