Three Decades in the Observation and Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis holds a historic position in the psychosomatic movement in this country. Since the emotional factors in this disease were first described at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, special interest in this condition has continued there. Four members of the Columbia Psychoanalytic Clinic with special experience with the disease and with two gastroenterologists who have been associated with the three senior analysts in the inve…
Psychogenic Factors in Essential Hypertension
A combined psychoanalytic and physiological investigative technique is possible and useful in the design of a definitive psychophysiological experiment for the elucidation of psychogenic factors in essential hypertension. The Nickerson ballistocardiograph is a valid and consistent physiological technique for the determination of the stroke volume and cardiac output in early cases of hypertensive vascular disease. This hemodynamic value and the bl…
Frickey, Burns and Mitchell, and the Transport-Building Cycle
N previous issues of this Review,1 one of the present authors presented material to demonstrate the occurrence of a seventeen-toeighteen year cycle in the development of the United States for the period I825-I933. This cycle was designated the transport-building cycle and was found to exist in such comprehensive and strategic series as transport development, immigration, urban population growth, bituminous and anthracite coal production, pig iron…
Psychodynamic and Electroencephalographic Factors in Duodenal Ulcer
Twenty-five cases of duodenal ulcer were studied from a psychodynamic and electroencephalographic point of view. The cases represented an unselected sample of the Naval ulcer population. The electroencephalographic data showed a high incidence of dominant alpha activity in this ulcer group. Using the Davis classification for the measurement of normal electroencephalograms, it was found that 76 per cent of the cases were in the dominant alpha grou…
Electroencephalographic Studies in Asthma with Some Personality Correlates
Fifty-four male cases of bronchial asthma have been studied from the point of view of electro-encephalographic and personality data. The electroencephalographic data indicate a definite relationship between bronchial asthma and a dominant alpha record, i.e., about three times as many dominant alpha records were found in the asthmatic group as in a normal group. Dominant alpha records have been correlated with passive, receptive types of individua…
