  • Relationship among Estrogen-induced Psychophysiological Changes in Hypogonadal Women

Quentin R Regestein, Isaac Schiff et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1981

Estrogen treatment of 16 hypogonadal women showed lessening of gonadotrophins, vasomotor symptoms, psychometrically measured aggression, and average sleep latency, but more Rapid Eye Movement sleep in a 100-day cross-over, double-blind comparison with placebo treatment. Of eight insomniac subjects, four showed decreased, but four showed increased insomnia scores and sleep latencies. Clinical rank of psychological intactness correlated with sleep …

  • Alpha Rhythm Percentage Maintained During 4- and 12- Hour Feedback Periods

    Quentin R Regestein, Vernon G Pegram et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1973

This experiment used Kamiya's feedback method (1) to induce electroencephelographic (EEG) alpha rhythm in experimental subjects. We first selected naturally high alpha subjects from a five hour conditioning procedure and subsequently reinforced high and then low amounts of alpha rhythm in them during two separate 12-hour periods. We had no idea whether the production and maintenance of either alpha rhythm or nonalpha EEG activity over such a prol…

  • Effect of Daytime Alpha Rhythm Maintenance on Subsequent Sleep

    Quentin R Regestein, G H Buckland et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1973

The sleep of five subjects was studied electroencephalographically to investigate whether the prolonged daytime maintenance of EEG alpha rhythm under feedback conditions affects sleep on the following night. Each of the subjects slept in the laboratory during two separate five-night periods, Monday through Friday, at least a week apart. During Thursday of each study, the subject spent twelve hours producing money-reinforced alpha or nonalpha depe…
