Feasibility of the heaviness perception test as an assessment of interoception
BACKGROUND: Interoception refers to the multisensory integration and perception of the body's internal state within the central nervous system, which involves learning, memory, emotions, and experiences. Interoceptive dysfunction has been associated with alexithymia and alexisomia. Despite growing academic interest in interoception, standardized evaluation methods have yet to be established. The widely used Heartbeat Counting Task (HCT), a repres…
Dohsa‐hou Relaxation Enhances Cardiac Parasympathetic Activity Assessed by Analysis of Heart Rate Variability
This study examined whether Dohsa‐hou relaxation might enhance cardiac autonomic nervous activity as assessed by analysis of heart rate variability (HRV). Healthy adults in a parenting support group ( N = 40, 16 men and 24 women, mean age = 31.2 years, SD = 3.9 years), participated in this study. Participants were randomly assigned to the Dohsa‐hou or control groups. The Dohsa‐hou group performed two Dohsa‐hou treatments, Kukan no hineri (Torso T…
Effect of Slowed Respiration on Cardiac Parasympathetic Response to Threat
The present study was designed to examine the effect of voluntarily slowed respiration on the cardiac parasympathetic response to a threat: the anticipation of an electric shock. Thirty healthy college students were randomly assigned to the slow, fast, and nonpaced breathing groups (10 subjects each). Subjects in the slow and fast paced breathing groups regulated their breathing rate to 8 and 30 cpm, respectively, and those in the nonpaced breath…
