Body mass index and parasympathetic nervous system reactivity and recovery following graded exercise
This report extends prior research studying BMI and patterns of vmHRV reactivity in the domain of physical exercise. Our data contribute to previous reports suggesting that high BMI can lead to maladaptive patterns of vmHRV reactivity to and recovery from physical exercise
How does the present research crisis affect music therapy
During the last decade, fundamental methodological issues have been identified in scientific disciplines related to music therapy. One major challenge was found in the extremely low falsification rates of empirical findings in so-called “soft sciences”, such as psychology, psychiatry, and clinical medicine. Moreover, researchers failed to replicate previously reported results, especially in psychology. Therefore, the question arises whether the s…
The effectiveness of receptive music therapy in palliative care
Background: Music therapy has been used as a complementary treatment in palliative care for more than 35 years. Despite some promising findings regarding the improvement of quality of life and pain, empirical evidence is still rare. Objective: The goal of the present study was to examine the effects of a standardized, live music therapy relaxation intervention for terminally ill patients. Methods: A total of 84 patients were randomly assigned to ei…

Methodological challenges for music therapy controlled clinical trials in palliative care
Since the late 1970s, music therapy has been an important part of multidisciplinary palliative care programs. Despite its wide application and high acceptance by patients, caregivers and staff members, recent systematic reviews and reports point to a lack of research, and the need for controlled clinical trials. The present article reviews the methodological quality of controlled clinical trials on the effects of music therapy in palliative care …
The Quick Inventory of Pain Symptoms (Qips)
The article presents the Quick Inventory of Pain Symptoms (QIPS) to assess the frequency and intensity of pain experienced within the last week in non-clinical samples. The first evaluation of the inventory administered to 100 undergraduate and graduate students revealed a concurrent validity of the QIPS with the four pain-related items of the symptom checklist (SCL-90r). Furthermore, this preliminary analysis showed that the QIPS is capable of r…
Music listening has no positive or negative effects on sleep quality of normal sleepers
This paper investigates the effects of a music listening intervention on sleep quality in young participants with normal sleep. Recent studies show that relaxing classical music is an effective intervention to reduce sleep problems. The question arises, if such an intervention might have side effects on people who are not faced with sleep difficulties at first instance. We hypothesized that listening to relaxing classical music has an effect (eit…
