Selection of a Single Ethanol Test Solution in Free-Choice Studies with Animals
Facilitation of Discriminated Avoidance Learning by Prior Operant Training
Prior operant training facilitated discriminated lever-press avoidance performance when discontinuous shock (0.2 sec. on time, 2.0 sec. off time) was delivered to rats. Avoidance rather than escape responding occurred in all of the animals whether massed training (3 sessions per day) or spaced training (1 session per day) was given. In control rats, which received no prior operant experience, avoidance learning was markedly inferior to that of th…
Failure of Stress of Electric Shock to Increase Ethanol Intake in Rats
To determine the effects on ethanol selection of a 14-day period of stress produced by intermittent shock (0.7 ma for 2.5 sec) delivered to the floor of individual cages, 28 Purdue Wistar rats (aged 130 to 160 days) were randomly assigned to experimental conditions as follows: (1) 7 rats restricted to 12% ethanol for 20 days (acclimated) then given shock 6 times per hour on a variable interval schedule; (2) 7 controls acclimated to 12% ethanol fo…
Voluntary Alcohol Consumption in Animals
This paper is devoted to the methodological problems and research findings related to volitional ethanol consumption in animals. The topics discussed include the concept of ethanol preference and the various self-selection methods for testing ethanol preference, such as the two-bottle test and several multiple selection methods. A critique also is presented of the physiological and psychological factors which may govern ethanol selection, includi…
Differences in Maze Performance of Group- vs Isolation-Reared Rats
A number of experimental investigations have verified that alterations in an animal's early experience may modify its normal pattern of behavior in adulthood (summarized by Denenberg, 1962 ) . Angermeier ( 1960), for example, found that animals reared together or in social isolation differ with respect to learning an instrumental response to obtain several kinds of social contacc. Recently, Woods (1959) confirmed the findings of Bingham and Griff…
